The Fox and the Hound is a pretty good Disney film.

Unfortunately (or maybe “fortunately”) it’s even further from the source material than Disney’s Beauty and the Beast or Ghibli’s Howl’s Moving Castle.

Dan Mannix’s book does absolutely nothing to anthropomorphise either the dog or the fox – not only do they not speak, not only are they definitely not friends – they don’t even think; they both operate on pure instinct.

And that’s why i say that Disney’s ditching of everything but the title might be “fortunate” – because there’s no way that Mannix’s book (good as it is) could have been filmed in any way that would make sense on the screen.

At least Disney got a fairly decent film out of it.

(For those who might be familiar with the SF and nature art of John Schoenhorr – he illustrated the Mannix book. An his art is exactly the sort of contrast to the Disney film’s style that Mannix’s story is to the film’s story.)
