MARTHA THOMASES: Must The World Have A (Mrs.) Superman?

Martha Thomases

Martha Thomases brought more comics to the attention of more people than anyone else in the industry. Her work promoting The Death of Superman made an entire nation share in the tragedy of one of our most iconic American heroes. As a freelance journalist, she has been published in the Village Voice, High Times, Spy, the National Lampoon, Metropolitan Home, and more. For Marvel comics she created the series Dakota North. Martha worked as a researcher and assistant for the author Norman Mailer on several of his books, including the Pulitzer-Prize-winning Executioner's Song, On Women and Their Elegance, Ancient Evenings, and Harlot's Ghost.

So I’m disappointed that the marriage will no longer be. That said, I trust Grant Morrison to write great stories.

I’m 59 and I’ve been reading Superman almost as long as you. I too am upset that the marriage is going away. I stopped reading Spider-Man when they had a similarly short-sighted idea. And I am less sanguine than you about Grant Morrison. His Batman stories have been a chore and trading the marriage for him is hardly an even swap.

I am with George here. I’ve been reading Superman for 25 years. I am not thrilled with Morrison taking over being in the minority that didn’t love All Star Superman nor his Batman run.

I actually dig Morrison’s Batman and the notion of him writing a Superman title was something I could get behind.
That said, I think getting rid of the marriage is a bad idea, and worse, a lazy one (I think the same thing about the Spider-annulment, too). The problem with the Superman books hasn’t been that Superman is “too old” or that he’s married. The problem has been that Superman wasn’t in Action Comics for two years! And he wasn’t in Superman for over a year! He didn’t need a new costume or a new backstory or new #1’s, he needed to be in the damn comics!

Great column, Martha, but I’m really upset that the marriage is going away.

But it’s all about Hollywood, and you and I know both know that.
