ComicMix Six: Stories We Thought Were April Fool’s Jokes But Weren’t

comicmixsix600-4733803

Another April Fool’s Day has come and gone, leaving in its wake a trail of confusion as comics news sites posted fake news article after fake news article in an attempt to hoax their audiences into believing things that couldn’t possibly be true.

Naturally, ComicMix condemns all such shenanigans as juvenile and unworthy.

All the same, now that we’ve had a day or two to process, there have been six recent happenings in the comics world that stood out as so weird, so unlikely, that we were completely floored when they turned out to be true. But don’t take our word for it, take a look below.

governator-stan-lee_320-7363030Stan Lee and Arnold Schwarzenegger are teaming up for The Governator, a comic and TV show detailing the adventures of the ex-Governor of California, ex-King of Aquilonia as he teams up with a precocious pre-teen hacker to fight crime. This is a thing that’s going to happen. Not a joke. We couldn’t believe it either. You’d think after Peter Paul and the Clintons Stan would stay clear of politicians.

Warner Formally Announces ‘Superman: the Blu-Ray Collection’

In 1977, director Richard Donner made us believe a man can fly. It also proved for the first time that comic book heroes could be successfully translated to the silver screen. The subsequent films in the Superman series were of varying quality, getting worse by the film until the series was given a rest. In 2006, the franchise was revived under director Bryan Singer whose slavish attention to Donner’s vision may have compromised the film’s own integrity. And now, Zack Snyder is busily prepping production on a brand new vision of the Man of Steel.

Before that, though, Warner Home Video is finally releasing the five films on Blu-ray in a mammoth collection, in support of June’s Green Lantern release. Here’s a trailer followed by the formal release.

Burbank, Calif. March 31, 2011 –Superman, the cultural icon and quintessential superhero, is back in a big way. In a powerhouse year marked by the theatrical releases of several major superhero films including Warner Bros.’ Green Lantern, his arrival couldn’t be more perfectly timed. Warner Home Video (WHV) is celebrating the year of the superhero with the June 7 release of Superman: The Motion Picture Anthology (1978-2006) on Blu-ray. For the first time, fans will be able to own one super-entertaining Blu-ray collection with all four original theatrical Superman films starring Christopher Reeve (available for the first time in high def), Superman Returns, and the two alternate versions of Superman I and Superman II.

ALL PULP NEEDS TO HEAR FROM YOU!

A message from Tommy Hancock, EIC of All Pulp and Member of the Spectacled Seven-

First, I want to thank each and every one of you who have visited ALL PULP for your interest, support, and comments over the last few months.  It’s hard to believe how many people have viewed the site and hopefully enjoyed our content over the last seven, almost eight months.  It has truly been a pleasure to not only post news, reviews, interviews, etc., but it has been an honor to become, according to comments many of you have made, a vital part of the Pulp world, a major force in the Pulp Renaissance we are all currently enjoying.

ALL PULP definitely wants to and will continue to be a driving contributor and beacon for All The News that is Pulp and to do that, ALL PULP needs your help.  Now I have posted comments like this before, here and in other places, and those of you who listen to THE BOOK CAVE, ALL PULP’s official podcast, have heard me say this sort of thing there as well.  But I write this to you now to stress how important YOU are to what we do.

ALL PULP needs to know some things from you.

What do you want to see more of, both generally and specifically?
What are we doing that you don’t really care for?
What features would you like to see added?
What companies that you love are we not even aware of?
What creators that you love need to be featured on ALL PULP that aren’t?
What creators and companies that are regulars on ALL PULP do you want to see more from?
Is news all you want?  Do you enjoy fiction, art, and the other things ALL PULP has done?
Do you want more ‘out of the box’ stuff from ALL PULP and if so, what?
If you’re a creator or a publisher, please sound off on those things as well, but also-What can we do to make sure you are sending us all your news, information, and special features you’d like to have on ALL PULP on a regular basis? I would love it if the ALL PULP staff had the time to track down every scrap of news and come to you and ask what you have going on, but the reality is we don’t.  No one gets paid at ALL PULP and most of us are struggling writers and publishers ourselves, which means time is something we don’t have a ton of  What can we do to get into a regular conversation of sorts with you as creators to get your stuff out there and content for the site?
Please answer these questions.  You can either click the COMMENTS tabe on the ALL PULP page and leave your answers there OR you can email me directly at allpulp@yahoo.com.   Now, most of the time when these types of questions are asked, no one replies or maybe one or two do.  If that happens, this time, that’s fine, but that means that things may continue as status quo at ALL PULP until I and others find a magic treasure chest full of time to focus on doing different things with the site.   I encourage and ask each of you to send me your thoughts and suggestions.
ALL PULP is the site for all the news that is Pulp.  And we want to do even more of that the way YOU LIKE IT.
Thank you,
Tommy

Edgar Wright Picks His Ant-Man… Meet Jack Black.

Edgar Wright, director of such nerd-worthy hits like Shawn of the Dead, and the recent not-so-blockbusting Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, has come forward with some interesting news on his next flick. The Dorset, England native did a little name dropping to Variety early this morning. “Hollywood knows my track record with the comic-book cultists… but it seems with the less than stellar box office take for Pilgrim meant I’d have to take a real leap in casting my next star. Luckily for me, I had Jack in my back pocket.” And with that, the cat was let out of the bag. For Wright’s soon to be finished script for Marvel’s Ant-Man being pushed into production, he was quick to drop this bit of casting news to help build early buzz.

Wright’s script, utilizing the director’s quick wit, is in his words, “a real tongue in cheek kind of deal.” He went on to comment “I mean, I really didn’t think Hank Pym was movie material, unless we wanted a comedy about beating your tiny wife…”. The near-approved draft will have Jack Black starring as former thief turned superhero Scott Lang.

“I’m just jazzed about getting Jack on board. His range of emotions, his physicality, and his vocal prowess as a rock singer just really vibe with me. There’s so much to work with here. How could I not be excited?” Wright finished up his comments with a little teaser. “Since Jack signed on, I couldn’t help myself… there WILL be a musical number towards the end of the film, that will easily put my Ant-Man teeny heads and shoulders above anything they’re doing on any other superhero flick. I mean, Spider-Man 3 didn’t really gel with the fans until the little dance number they had in the second act, right? I mean that movie was Marvel’s best comedy to date, and I plan on topping it.”

DC Comics To Prosecute Tattoos

Superman tattooIn a startling move to control images of their copyrighted characters, lawyers for Warner Bros Entertainment, parent company of DC Comics, have begun issuing cease and desist orders to fans sporting tattoos featuring DC characters. While walking the floor of last month’s C2E2 in Chicago, several fans were handed official looking documents citing that they were in violation of DC’s copyrights– over their tattoos.

“It is unlicensed artwork. And like any bootlegged material we are going to come down against it. We see it as no different from t-shirt or other paraphernalia” said one of the WB lawyers.

Many comic book conventions, including ReedExpo’s New York Comic Con and C2E2, feature tattoo pavilions showcasing tattooists and their art. Wizard’s Chicago Comic Con has also welcomed tattoo artists onto their floor, encouraging fans to show off their ink or get some at the show.

“I guess I’ll have to wear long-sleeved shirts when I go to cons now” said one fan after getting a c & d order. He is close to finishing a Justice League themed sleeve on his left arm. “I’m not going to stop or get it covered up. It’s how I chose to express myself as a fan!”

This comes at a time when tattoos have become almost accepted in mainstream culture and as comic book movies are big budget blockbusters. And it looks like Warner Brothers has spotted a money making opportunity.

“We will be unveiling a line of official DC Comics Tattoos at this year’s San Diego Comic Con. Tattoo shop owners will be able to purchase these pages of tattoo flash for their shops and offer their clientele officially licensed DC Comics artwork.

Futurama, Sons Of Anarchy Cross-Over!

gemma-xover-leela-7452844At last, some fans will be fulfilling their fondest dreams as Futurama’s Turanga Leela does her long-awaited guest turn on Sons of Anarchy.

The focus of the story arc will involve Leela being commissioned to bring notorious biker-mama Gemma Teller Morrow to justice. Gemma doesn’t appreciate the attention, and of course SAMCRO comes to her defense. Out-gunned, Leela is aided by Bender and Fry in a bloody fight to the finish with Gemma, Jax and Clay.

After years of negotiation, it finally occurred to producers that both shows are distributed by divisions of 20th Century Fox and this crossover will inure to the benefit of their corporate coffers. Merchandising will abound, with Leela imagery under the Sons of Anarchy logo showing up on various Harley-Davidson products.

As exclusively reported last month on ComicMix, Futurama has been picked up for a 13-episode season in 2012 – its eighth – following a similar commitment that begins in June of this year. Sons of Anarchy will begin its fourth year at the start of the “traditional” television season this coming fall.
