The Lone Ranger Avenges ‘The Death of Zorro’
Well, we didn’t see this one coming. Check out the press release from Dynamite Entertainment:
NEW YORK, NY (December 14, 2010)-One of comicdom’s first and greatest heroes, Zorro, will have fallen in battle, sacrificing his life to save his people. Upon learning of this tragedy, it falls unto the future hero of the Wild West, The Lone Ranger®, to avenge the death!
Dynamite Entertainment, home to several best-selling comic book titles and properties, and Classic Media, a global media company with a portfolio of some of the world’s leading entertainment franchises, including The Lone Ranger, and Zorro LLC, today announced the publication of the first crossover comic for pop-culture’s most-famous masked heroes, The Lone Ranger and Zorro.
Written by Ande Parks, the first issue will also feature covers by Alex Ross and professional wrestling icon-turned-artist, Jerry “The King” Lawler, as well as Francesco Francavilla and Tom Yeates! The comic is scheduled to arrive in stores in March 2011.
“This series is a really exciting opportunity for me,” says writer Ande Parks. “Not only do I get to write two truly legendary American heroes, but I get to write a defining moment for one of them… his death. This series isn’t just about the death of Zorro, though. It’s about the enormous legacy that he leaves behind. When a hero dies, he leaves behind a legion of people that have been touched by his deeds. In this case, Zorro’s legacy has touched a young Lone Ranger. Unfortunately, the bad guys that have ended Zorro’s life are a small but powerful army who plan on continuing to victimize the Native Americans Zorro was trying to help. Zorro’s legacy, even as embodied by The Lone Ranger, may not be enough to defeat this army of renegade Civil War bushwhackers.”
“Zorro and The Lone Ranger were two of the primary icons I had never gotten a chance to paint before, and I was excited to get the chance with such an important crossover,” says Alex Ross. “Of the designs I conceived, this is more of an intimate portrait-like shot, separating the two men by the subtlest of details.”
“Zorro is one of the most iconic heroes of all time, and it is an incredible honor that Zorro is partnered with another legendary hero, The Lone Ranger,” adds John Gertz, the President & CEO Zorro Productions, Inc. “This comic is a must-read for fans of both Zorro and The Lone Ranger!”
“We are excited to partner with Dynamite Entertainment and Zorro Productions to bring together two of the greatest heroes in the comic world,” said Karyn Schneider, VP, Licensing, Classic Media. “The Lone Ranger is America’s favorite hero of the Wild West and has captured the hearts and imaginations of fans for generations. With the two characters’ enduring legacies, this first crossover comic marks a memorable moment in comic book and pop-culture history, inspiring fans for many years to come.”
Dynamite has had tremendous critical success with our Zorro and The Lone Ranger books, written by Matt Wagner and Brett Matthews respectively, and are honored to be working with Ande Parks to tell this tale,” says Dynamite President Nick Barrucci. “I am excited to see the responses from fans from both franchises in this crossover of these two renowned heroes!”
I have to say that this story has a hook that really grabs me. What a neat idea. I hope it is executed (ahem) well.
How many centuries apart are Zorro and the Ranger?
I agree; I love good Western comics and this sounds extremely interesting and I’m thrilled to see Tom Yeates (one of my favorite artists) attached to it.

Not any they’re only a few decades apart. Zorro live around the 1820’s and the Lone Ranger probably the 1860’s or 1870’s.

Don Diego de la Vega was born in the late 18th century. He became Zorro in the early 19th. If he were born in 1890, he would have become Zorro circa 1812.
The Texas Rangers weren’t officially formed until October 17, 1835. Since John and Dan Reid were Rangers, the Lone Ranger has to take place after that date. Some stories have taken place during the American Civil War (1861-1865) or even later.
That should have read “If he were born in 1890…” Oops!
Good grief. I typed it wrong AGAIN. “If he were born in 1790…” I finally did it right!

So, LR avenging Zorro’s death was a better idea than just having them team up?
I’m liking the idea, Delmo. In order to have a Lone Ranger & Zorro team-up, you’d need to have a senior citizen Zorro or a successor to the name (such as Alejandro Murrieta of “The Mask of Zorro”) instead of Don Diego.
It’s comics-I’d rather they just futz the timeline a bit so they could meet in their primes.

I am writing to you from Sydney Australia where I am setting up an independent publishing company called Silver Fox Comics! Our debut release scheduled for late Jan 2011 is a new Zorro comic – featuring 2 new all original stories.
I am writing to you in the hope that you will consider writing an article on this venture. If you would be interested to do a review I will send you a pdf of the Zorro stories. i will also include your review in my comic and press releases and it may open your site to all Aus comic fans.
This is Zorro as he’s never been unleashed before. Its East meets West with Latino machismo, Roberto Rodriguez styled action, the supernatural, horror, sex, and drugs.
The first story “The Defeat by Destiny” sees Zorro facing Spanish General Louis Cypher who plans to introduce the destructive but profitable influence of opium into the Americas. Under his auspices Yoshiko the empress of Opium and her Samurai warrior Ashikaga enter California. Cypher sets the trap with the kidnapping of the Indian princess Aiyana with her life is held at stake unless Zorro reveals his true identity forcing the ultimate duel of Zorro against Ashikaga the Samurai Warrior.
“Love Never Ends” is a Gothic styled thriller questioning love beyond the grave. When Mirella, a gypsy fortune-teller attempts to resurrect her dead lover she unleashes the undead. An old friend of Zorro’s becomes the walking dead and awakes to witness his ex-wife about to be married. In a final attempt to reach her, revenge and the possession of a battle-axe overcomes him, and he sets out to kill the bride.
We’re working with Zorro production on this and this is their recent review of our work:
This may be the boldest and most daring Zorro comics ever created. A combination of classic Hollywood action, the supernatural, and a touch of the Far East make this comic a blockbuster. We applaud the inspiration of Sorab Del Rio and his team. Could this be the basis of the next Zorro movie?”
