My Spider-Man ‘One More Day’ and ‘One Moment In Time’ Rant
All right, I’m finally sick and tired of this.
With the previews beginning to leak out from Spider-Man’s “One Moment In Time” story, which they claim will be the magic bullet that retconned Spider-Man’s marriage, I can stay silent no longer.
Everybody says “Oh, they’ll never put Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson back together.” And every time somebody says so, I can’t help but think of Latka and Simka.
In the two part Taxi episode, “Scenskees From A Marriage”, Latka (Andy Kaufman) strays from his marriage to Simka (Carol Kane) and due to their cultural restrictions, they must break up. To explain where I see all of this heading, we now must show the climactic scene of the divorce (jump ahead to about 2:55, if you must):
Now, there’s another thing to consider. The comics industry, for all of its maturing and stabilization, still remembers the scare of censors and the like. Does Disney really want to deal with the backlash from the religious right when they finally notice that this leading hero cut a deal with the devil to destroy the sanctity of his marriage? Personally, I’m amazed that James Dobson, who’s always looking for a new thing to beat up Disney over, hasn’t already gone after this one.
But the lingering resentment is still there from fans, who look at that and say that it came out of left field, that it ruined the character of Peter Parker, because of the way this change was made.
Luckily, there is a solution to all of this.
Eventually, there will be a story where Peter Parker discovers what had happened before, and that he had a prior life where he was married to Mary Jane. And he will be confronted with a choice: he can go back and return to that previous life, but if he does, he will undo all that has come from it.
Harry Osborn? He’ll be dead.
May Parker? Dead, too.
What would he choose? Heck, what would you choose?
If this Peter Parker makes a decision– and note I’m not even saying which way the decision should go, although I have my own take on it– then he will have taken on the responsibility for it. And great responsibility is what it’s all about for Peter.
And even more– Peter will have the chance to learn from his decisions, and to go on and try to make things better.
Fuck James Dobson.
Not even with Ann Coulter’s dick.
Damn!! Glenn, oh NO you did-ANT! LOL!
I hope your prediction comes true, but the handling for spiderman sometimes makes me wonder if that kind of thought is being put into it. Time will tell but I think IMD is always going to live on in infamy no matter what the future holds for Peter and Mary.
Another suggestion that I have heard that I like a lot is that while Peter and Mary Jane were pondering their choice, Mephisto made a deal with Norman Osborn, which neatly explains Harry being back, Dark Reign and the marriage going away.
“Let’s see I get my son back, I get to be the number one cop in the world, Parker is miserable and the only downside is that Parker’s Aunt who will die of old age soon enough anyway doesn’t die right away. Sign me up!”
You know who would be more pissed-off about the deal with Mephisto than anyone else?
May Parker.
That’s right, May Parker, whose life Peter and Mary Jane saved by making their deal with Mephisto. If she could have spoken up at the time, she would have figuratively grabbed Peter by the ear and told him she’d lived her life, dying would mean she’d be with Ben again and that under no circumstances should Peter give up his life with MJ to buy her another few years.

That was a rant? I was expecting fire and brimstone. So disappointed. I just want Marvel to give Peter his balls back. I’m tired of reading Pussy Parker.
Preach Brother Delmo, preach!

I’m still waiting for all those stories that couldn’t be told with a married Peter Parker.

I offered Marvel a story to Mary Jane and Spiderman back together and was quickly turned down. I want to hear from the fans did Marvel make a mistake. Google Mary Jane Trial by Fire
