Gene Colan Hospitalized, Artwork Missing
Gene Colan, who just received an Eisner nomination for Best Single Story, was injured last week and is now being cared for by his son and
daughter. In addition, it appears that some of Gene’s artwork has
disappeared, including pages from Nathaniel Dusk and a Star Wars-related
piece. The police are involved in the matter.
Clifford Meth reports: “If Gene Colan art
is currently circulating in the marketplace, it is possible that these
pieces were stolen. Collectors and fans of Gene are encouraged to email
me if you see artwork circulating that is the least bit questionable.”
He adds: “I
spoke with Gene early this evening and he is in good spirits, as
always. Unfortunately, he is also in pain and unable to use his right
arm at this time due to a serious shoulder injury.”

I'm so sorry to hear of Gene's troubles, and I wish not only a speedy recovery to him but that of the missing artwork as well. I've been a huge fan of Gene's great work since the 1960…'s. His artwork for Iron Man, Daredevil, and Sub-Mariner was an inspiration for a ten-year old who had aspirations to become a comic book artist.
I'm sorry to hear about Mr. Colan's injuries. He is truly one of the legends of American comics, and a great inspiration to those of us who grew up drinking in the visual worlds he created. I wish you the best and a speedy recovery, Mr. Colan.
Gene's work on Tomb of Dracula was one of the things that got me into comics and it's still one of the best examples of what comics can be. Nobody else looks like him and nobody even tries. Here's wishing him a swift recovery.
Best wishes to Gene and those touched by his presence – now and throughout time and dimensions. I was especially fond of his work on Daredevil (from the Mike Murdock days) and Doc Strange and Tomb of Dracula.
I hope he gets better and that the artwork is found. I loved his artwork in his and Steve Gerber's Phantom Zone miniseries and still want to see more by him. Get well soon, you master artist.
