- ICv2 – Every Book—10,000 Copies Stolen Uh, no. I call shenanigans. The better number is the one further down, that suggests that 10% of any book’s print run is pirated. And I’d argue that at towards the end of the long tail, a number aren’t even pirated at all because there’s just not enough people buying them in the first place.
- Jonah Hex Headed For Reshoots
- Why the Na’vi Are Making Me Blue: China Miéville has his doubts.
- Russian Moviegoers Tell Cameron and Avatar to Hold on There Comrade…We’ve Already Seen Pandora Harlan Ellison could not be reached for comment.
Anything else? Consider this an open thread.
China Miéville is a luddite dork. judging by his harangue – which is not really about Avatar, but rather about longing for the Good Old Days of Harryhausen stop motion, which he calls "vivid" and i call blatantly unrealistic-looking.As a commentor on the article said. i bet he likes the "warmth" and "realism" of vinyl records and film better than CDs and DVDs, as well.
I hate it when people say they prefer the "warmth" of vinyl. I have alot of records, and I love them, but it's been scientifically proven over and over that digital recordings more accurately recreate sound. The "warmth" of vinyl is the sound of thousands of tiny imperfections in the recreation.
Yep.Any number of carefully-conducted double-blind tests have proven that the "golden ear" types either cannot tell the difference, or are equally likely to identify a digital recording (or a system using ordinary zip-cord speaker leads rather than Monster Cable, or one using tubes rather than a solid-state one…).But they keep insisting that the tests were not "properly" conducted. It's kinda like the fact that some of the most vocal global warming skeptics i know – the ones who deny the validity of the basic data, much less the conclusions drawn from it – are also anti-vaccination, even though the "research" that led to the vaccines-cause-autism theory has been thoroughly discredited, The Lancet, which published it has withdrawn the paper, most of the listed co-authors have removed their nakmes, and the author of the main "study" that started the whole thing is facing being ,a href="<a href="http://www.thedenverchannel.com/education/22416192/detail.html" rel="nofollow"> <a href="http://;http://www.thedenverchannel.com/education/22416192/detail…">struck” target=”_blank”>;http://www.thedenverchannel.com/education/22416192/detail…">struck off the Medical Register in England for his sloppy and unethical "research" methods. But people keep on insisting that whenever objective fact conflicts with their prejudices it must be either a mistake or some sort of conspiracy.(Sorry – you pushed one of my buttons even more than the original post did.)
