Kevin Smith inspired me (and many in my age bracket) to pursue my dreams in the world of fiction. Growing up with his films, he began in my eye as one of those "untouchable" writer/directors who could do nothing wrong. Now that I'm a little older, a little wiser, I see Smith for what he is: a talented dialogue writer, with a good ear for turns of phrases… whose ability to cover any and all ground without fear gained him an audience of slackers for life. While his characters generally suffer from sounding too much alike… Kevin covers ground from religion, to being gay, to bromance, etc. in his movies with the air of "hey, it's life, deal with it."… for that I respect him a great deal. His work in comics runs hot and cold to me. His Daredevil work was amazing. Green Arrow? good that he brought back Ollie, and used a forgotten DC Junior hero to boot… His recent Batman books have been… icky… in my opinion. Not only because his friend was given the penciling job based on Kevin's obvious star power and draw. (and don't let me be too negative on this, Walt Flanagan is/has talent.. but I really hope Walt will get to step AWAY from Kevin enough to show that it's not just nepotism that will keep him in the business.)Ultimately, Smith is my generation's go-to-guy when it comes to celebrating the "rags to riches" american dream. From his humble beginnings to his success (and ability to whore out products en masse like no other)… this seems like just another opportunity to snag a quick buck from his base.Kudos Kevin… now give ME a job.
