Great review. I appreciate the fact that you didn't throw in the line about how the Bielski brothers saved more Jews than Oskar Schindler, a line that always bothered because it makes it sound like there was a competition during WWII to save Jews. (Because if there was, the prizes sucked and the entrants were waaaay too few and in any case Denmark won.)The movie implied that the Bielski's were smugglers rather than/in addition to "lower class workers".

I had the great fortune of studying under Necama Tec at UCONN for several classes and reading this powerful story of survival, keeping hope and yes, seeking comfort any way possible. The ladies of society learned to "marry" below their status to survive in the woods, and most stayed married afterwords. Bielski brother's were smugglers of human life and promised nothing but a chance for survival. I found it amazing that the Germans feared the forest as they did to go after the jews, but perhaps the Germans believed there were too few to bother. Prof. Tec's other books are equaly as compelling.
