Dicitonary.com offers one definition of Pilgrim as "a newcomer to a region or place, esp. to the western U.S." so I assume that's why Wayne's character referred to Stewart's character that way.

ITYM "…stars James Stewart and John Wayne…"Great as it is – and it definitely is – i hold to the opinion that at least two of Leone's Westerns – "The Good the Bad and the Ugly" and "Once Upon a Time in the West" (my own choice for greatest Western ever surpass it. (Of course, OUaTitW was Leone's love letter to Ford – when location scouting in Monument Valley, Leone could instantly identify every location and shot that Ford had used there.)
