Limerwrecks is a wonderfully goofy-fun site. A lot of the limericks don't scan as well as they might, and they aren't as bawdy as the form generally dictates, but I've rarely come away from the site without a chuckle and a smile.I wonder what this new UK law would make of The Original Johnson and it's graphic depiction of the sexual abuse of a child. I don't question the legality of it. But I have questioned whether portraying graphic sex with minors is in good taste, especially if the scene is written for laughs. That said, The Original Johnson had been one of the most original and exciting stories ComicMix. And I'm not sure why it ended so abruptly. It's a shame, really.
Russ you forgot Lone Justice "graphic depiction of a sexist bully ?" I wish I took more notice back in the day when "Suggested for mature readers" turn up on comicbooks, writers and artists at the time tryed to fight it but back then I never understood why but living in the UK and reading the link I think its a bit late to try to stop this now, but well try to add my voice to stop it
I thought Lone Justice's taunting of a helpless man, by calling him a "little girl," was out of character for someone who had said that they always stand on the side of justice. And I said so. It didn't seem like a "heroic" moment for the "hero" of the story. (As it turns out, Wheatley and Tinnel weren't interested in showing a Hero in a Heroic Moment, but a Hero that's a bit burned out by the job!) But I didn't find that scene in Lone Justice at all disturbing, not in the same way that I found The Original Johnson graphically portraying sex with children.But when is it in good taste to draw children having sex? When it's historical fiction? Is it OK to draw young boys having sex, but not young girls? Is it in good taste as long as the sex act is consensual? Is prostitution consensual sex? Is a child above the age of 10 appropriate to portray having sex? What about a child of 3? Is drawing one panel OK? Is one page? Two pages? What about a 26 page comic, is that excessive?I'm not talking about what should be legal or illegal here. I'm talking about what I personally find objectionable, in poor taste. I'm not saying that you need to find the same things "in poor taste," but finding NOTHING objectionable is like having no opinion or worse, no morals. I haven't read, "The Lost Girls," by Alan Moore, yet. But I find the it less objectionable to portray "Fantasy Children" from "Fantasy Settings," like OZ, Wonderland and Neverland having sex (especially if they are older than the age of consent) than portraying historical or "real" children, even if what you are showing is supposed to be historically accurate! Maybe that makes me a moral relativist, or is that a moral realist.I admit, I was surprised and disturbed by the graphic scenes of child abuse so cavalierly portrayed in The Original Johnson. But I wasn't shocked or outraged. I didn't stop reading ComicMix or The Original Johnson. I haven't tried to organize a boycott or protest. I've simply used the comments section to add mine. If that labels me a prude or just a loudmouthed twit, oh well.I commented here on The Original Johnson to show that what we are talking about isn't obscure or academic to ComicMix readers. There are Comics published right here on ComicMix that could be affected by overly-broad laws like the one being debated in the UK.
