I liked the fact that while the original commercials talked all about the plot and the intreigue, the new ones for the DVD make the movie seem more like a futuristic Goonies.

Only 2 boats got released in the first place – when the second struck the first one, it launched, but there was no third one to bump into the second to send it off the ramp. So only one boat was crushed to matchsticks. One thing I didn't get was how they were obviusly way way underground, yet they only had to climb a stone staircase, maybe an hour or two's climb, to get out onto the earth again. Any explanations for that?

Only one boat lost/crushed. Just as noted in the previous comment. The second boat was ready to launch. It had the same number as the second boat that came out of storage – the one that bumped the first boat. I believe it was number 91.
