One would think that any chance for a sequel to Independence Day had died long ago. But sequels to the original Stargate movie? I'm surprised that he is still trying to accomplish this. The official MGM stance is that this particular function is fulfilled by the TV franchise, and that is the 'Stargate' that is loved around the world, not the movie. Most people have forgotten about the movie, and this franchise is MGM's second biggest money maker, so allowing these movies to be made would alienate the entire fanbase and severely jeopardize the franchise, since these movies would be inevitable failures. Besides, Devlin and Emmerich sold the rights to MGM in the first place, so legally MGM has every right to rebuff his efforts. Why would they allow such a hated filmmaker to damage what has been such a blessing for them, thanks to efforts of Brad Wright and co.? Besides, MGM themselves are fans of this franchise, so Devlin is simply dreaming and wishing on a star as far as reality is concerned. He should give up.

Ah, so the poster above made a mistake in his assessment of the article, and the same could be said for the article itself. Devlin is talking more in the past tense about the Stargate sequels, not in the present tense. Devlin is only saying what he had wanted to do, not that he is necessarily still doing it.Note that he said that MGM wanted to play out the TV material first, and put his attempted project aside, quite probably permanently. Nowhere in the article does he say he is trying to do the movies. His last attempt in late 2006 seems to have failed, so though he may still be hoping, he probably doesn't expect it work out in the end. It never has in the past. He's reminiscing more than he is saying he is actively pursuing it.

I would much rather see the man finish the trilogy he had envisioned from the start. A sequel to the original Stargate movie sounds great to me. No reason the series can't plod along in its latest incarnation, making the studios money, doing its job. And its fans can enjoy it and ignore the movie if they choose.

I see the series for what it is – a parody. It is not THE continuation of the movie, and should never have been marketed as such.A serious continuation faithful to both the continuity of the movie and the vision of the original creators should be made.
