New ‘Forbidden Planet’ Continuation not Remake
Harry Knowles at Ain’t it Cool News provided his site with additional information regarding the just-announced remake of Forbidden Planet.
The movie, to be written by J. Michael Straczynski and produced by Joel Silver will be more a sequel than remake. The presumption is that Altair 4 did not blow up at the end of the Fred M. Wilcox/Cyril Hume classic.
The report goes on to say that the look will be that of an "enormous, giant, retro sci-fi movie"; likely retaining the original designs. All concerned have confirmed that the beloved Robby the Robot will return with his design unaltered.
Meantime, Straczynski confirmed that he has just finished a rewrite to the Thor script for director Kenneth Branagh.
Aww man, don't screw with a classic.
JMS has already refuted this:http://www.jmsnews.com/msg.aspx?id=1-17738&to…
Sorry, I'll believe it when I see it.People, GET A NEW IDEA!!!
Robert, this is completely wrong. I've already sent a message to Harry about this. Here's what JMS himself said about it…***Newsgroups: rec.arts.sf.tv.babylon5.moderatedFrom: "jmsa…@aol.com" Date: Thu, 6 Nov 2008 12:31:10 -0800 (PST)Local: Thurs, Nov 6 2008 2:31 pm Subject: Re: AICN claims to have info on "Forbidden Planet" – possible SPOILERSOn Nov 6, 5:33 am, Jan wrote: > Ain't It Cool News is claiming to have details about how JMS will approach > "Forbidden Planet", that it'll be less of a remake and more of a continuation:http://www.aintitcool.com/node/38991 > — That report is totally incorrect. It's not going to be retro, and it's not going to be a continuation. When Altair 4 blows up, it blows up. I have, however, found a way to honor the original movie without in any way besmirching it in order to do this iteration. Once folks find out what we're actually going to do, I think they'll be most pleased. Forbidden Planet remains one of my favorite films of all time, and I wouldn't even think about doing this project if I didn't think there was a way to do it that would not in any way diminish the original…which is why this is the the first development in years to actually get to the script stage. Everybody involved is very excited by the approach. jms ***Miles
I agree, don't screw with a classic or with the original Robby. Bring Robby back EXACTLY like he was. Don't make him CGI either … keep him his classic formidable yet lovable self … "Aye aye, skipper!" Let's see now, … how many pint of Kentucky whiskey did Robby manufacture?
