Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in America (the third in his "Once Upon a Time…" trilogy, after "…in the West" and …The Revolution" {released as first "Duck You Sucker" and later "A Fistful of Dynamite"}) is absolutely fascinating in a historical (both film and social) sense, an American gangster story, made by an Italian, based as much (or more) on the canon of American gangster films from Little Caesar to The Godfather as on reality, about Jewish gangsters. It's long (3 hr 50 min) and it's brutal (at least one gang rape and other graphic violence) , but it'll reward the patience it requires to sit through at least once, as will the other "Once Upon a Time…" films – particularly Duck You Sucker in the restored version…(dePalma has often been accused of being … a tad … umm … excessively influenced … by Hitchcock – his Untouchables flattered the hell of out of OUaTiA, right down to appropriating some of his signature moves and hiring Morricone to do the score…)

Actually, the 3rd one hasn't aged better with time. Speaking as someone who saw "The Godfather" for the first time two years ago, then followed up with the next two this past winter, I can say that Godfather III is every bit as bad as everyone said it was. I remember the 2nd one being disappointing at first, but the more I thought about it, the more I liked it. Now I think I love it. But the 3rd one? Well, the more I thought about THAT, the worse it got! Even when you aren't comparing it to the first two, it's an effing terrible movie! And if anyone dares say that Sofia Coppola has any talent in acting, please retire from watching movies… ever again.
