“Indeed, he’s quite open about the Castros’ shutting down critical newspapers and disenfranchisement of political moderates.”

Mike, Castro and Che KILLED people. And not just soldiers in a war, unarmed people whose “crime” was to not be 100% on board with the new bloodthirsty boss, same as the old bloodthirsty boss.(“If any person has a good word for the previous government that is good enough for me to have him shot.”) Reducing their savagery to “disenfranchisement ” does not fill me with hope of this being any more useful than a potential Walter Duranty hagiography on Stalin or a hard hitting expose of Franco by Pat Buchanan.

It may still be worthwhile from an artistic standpoint, of course.

Che was just another probable sociopath who lucked out in living in a place and era that allowed him to indulge his predilection for violence…and even luckier in that he had a nice picture taken of him, though that ended up being something that only capitalists profited from. Which is amusing on several levels. I regard anyone wearing a (non-ironic) Che T-shirt as I would someone who has a Mao poster or a painting by John Wayne Gacy. They either don;t know any better or they are trying to be edgy. The alternative explanation is too scary.

(Frankly, I think the National Lampoon “Che Guevara’s Bolivian Diaries” by the late great Doug Kenney does the best job of truly capturing the earnest incompetence of Che’s final, most conclusive, failure.)
