I kept trying to read "Grendel", starting from the very first. It just wasn't possible.

Do you mean from "Devil by the Deed" or "Devil's Legacy"?Everything M.Wagner has done on Grendel was in story arcs and each arcs were usually tailored to the different artist in question. Not to mention the various eras in each arcs (ie. Devil by the Deed – '40's or '50's/Devil's Legacy – 2012 etc.)But, yeah, it can get confusing.
