R.I.P. ‘Confessions of a Cereal Eater’ Writer Rob Maisch
Illustrator and ComicMix pal Bo Hampton recently passed along the following thoughts on this week’s death of Rob Maisch, the celebrated author of Confessions of a Cereal Eater:
Rob Maisch, the extraordinary raconteur who wrote 1995’s Harvey and Eisner nominated "Confessions of a Cereal Eater," published by NBM and illustrated by Rob’s friends, Bo Hampton and Scott Hampton, Rand Holmes and Sandy Plunkett, died this week unexpectedly of cardiac problems in Copley, Ohio.
According to his long-time friends, the Hamptons, his hilarious stories, energetic teasing, and love of life will keep him vividly alive for them forever.
Damn. Rob and I went way back. When we were teenagers, he used to draw the occasional cover for my apazines. Not that most of the folks here know what an "apazine" is. He was a good guy and a very funny writer. Go with God, buddy.
Never met the man, but I'm really sorry to hear that. I loved the original "Confessions of a Cereal Eater" collection and was always happy to see a new issue when they were later coming out in serial form. He had some great stories; I imagine they were even better when he was telling them in person.
Rob was a great friend and a lively spirit. I am going to miss him very much.
I knew Rob over a period of about 35 years–when I was just beginning to distribute new comics, he was an employee of one of my first customers, the Curious Book Shop, in East Lansing Mich. I last saw him at San Diego a couple of years ago. He was good people.
Rob Maisch, alias "Rocco", was one of my best friends at Michigan State Univ. during those years when many of the stories in "Confessions of a Cereal Eater" originated….in reality!!! I myself was one of the characters (The Weasel) in some of the anectodal short stories from Bawdiers, which was our floor name in the MSU dorm from 1971-1973. I will miss my friend, my pal, our memories. Jack Perkowski
i only met rob once, but he was a really kind, down to earth guy.i'll always enjoy re-reading the cereal eater stories he wrote.:-(
