I had a similar reaction on the first read. Then I talked to Tim and learned that he made the book in the years after his mother died very suddenly, and the book is essentially an outlet for him to grieve and be angry. With that understanding, I went back to the book and saw a lot more depth than I previously had. Could some of my new appreciation of it be from sympathy? Sure. But I don't think that accounts for all of it.One other little thing: It's a giant octopus, not a squid. Tim said he spent nights at the aquarium in the Mall of America studying the octopus there.
