Soon it will be 2008! An entire new year! A fresh start! A new beginning! A new lease on life! I love it, love it LOVE IT!
Before my last rant of 07 begins, I should address some things. I’ve been asked repeatedly as to why my last two columns were a bit, shall we say… reflective?
Somebody even asked me why last week’s column were gloomy and downright depressing. Well, as I said in my very first column 46 weeks ago, I would always carry a real point of view in this space.
My point of view.
I just can’t join the crowd and march to the same beat as everyone else does. As Sammy Davis Jr. said “ I got to be me.”
Who is Sammy Davis Jr.?
You should be ashamed of yourself if you don’t know that, fanboy. Now go Google.
I don’t know about you but I’m a much a joiner of popular causes as John Galt was.
Who is John Galt?
Put down 52 and Google it, fanboy. Or go watch The Incredibles again, but this time with your bong.
Yes, this wonderful weekly column (or not, depending on rather or not you think I’m an asshole) is just me being me. Most days I like me. Some days I don’t. However every day I’m glad to be me, because I stand for something. I have a definitive look at the world that has taken shape because of my experiences,
That said; I’m not one of those people that look at their life and proudly proclaim that they would not change a thing.
Nope. I’m not that guy. I would change a lot. A whole lot.
I know I have made some real mistakes in my life and I’m not proud of them. But I am proud that I acknowledge them and say I’m sorry when others are involved. I have said “I’m sorry” a lot in my life for stupid mistakes I have made.
However I will not apologize for my point of view. I will not apologize for loving Jesus just because you may love Allah. I respect you, so you respect me. Frankly I don’t think that Jesus and Allah would have a problem with each other, so if you have a problem with me then that’s on you. Me? I’m going to have some bacon.
I will not apologize for being a liberal. Nor will I apologize for pointing out glaring differences in how people of color are treated in this country. Case in point: remember that black 17 year old kid who was sent to jail for 10 years because he had consensual relations with another teenager? Consensual relations? Not sexual intercourse but consensual relations? For that he got 10 YEARS IN JAIL!
Remember that? Well, where is the manhunt and outrage over the guy who knocked up Britney Spears 16 year old sister? I’m going to go out on the limb here, but don’t you have to have sex to get pregnant?
And, if he has been dating her for three years as reported in the media then that means (give me a second; I went to public school) that he started seeing her when she was 13.
Even Jerry Lee Lewis would think that was too young.
Who is Jerry Lee Lewis? Google, fanboy. Google.
I will not apologize to black women (as I was recently asked at a party to do by a REAL drunk white girl) for loving an Asian woman. I reject the notion that you “take one for the team.” I think you fall in love with whomever you fall in love with.
Period.
I also reject the notion that there are only a “few good black man out there.” That is the stupidest stereotype on the planet and simply not true. That girl at the party was lucky I left my DEATH RAY in my car.
Yes, these are some of my points of view. As I stated I would not apologize for having a point of view, especially when so many in this country are sheep.
I still cannot believe I have written 46 of these things and not been run over by a car or attacked by a raging group of republicans.
With the above in mind what follows is my:
Top Ten List Why I’m Glad it’s 2008!
10. I’m a black man living in L.A. and I survived another year without being shot by LAPD.
9. Bacon is still plentiful.
8. I have the best thing EVER to hold over Mike Gold’s head. He sent me the wrong Christmas present. So Mike, just who is Joseph & Mary? Wait a sec…did you send me a present that was supposed to go to JOSEPH & MARY?? And I opened it?? OMG, I’m going to Hell!! Wait. It was addressed to John and Mary. Never mind.
7. I have Jewish Lawyers.
6. There is a real possibility that we may have a black man as President!
5. There is a real possibility that we may have a woman as President!
4. There is a real possibility that we may have a Democrat as President!
3. There is NO possibility that we will have George Bush as President!
2. I’m returning to the drawing board! How you like me now, DC?
And the number one reason why I’m glad it’s 2008?
1. I live in America!
As much as I bitch, I love this country and would not want to live anywhere else!
Lastly please be safe if you go out this New Years Eve remember what we say in hood: “Don’t drink and drive by.’
See you all next year.

Remember that? Well, where is the manhunt and outrage over the guy who knocked up Britney Spears 16 year old sister? I’m going to go out on the limb here, but don’t you have to have sex to get pregnant? To be fair, I'm sure that if the father was black, he'd be being held without bail right now…Wait. That's not exactly fair, is it. Yeah, okay, I can see the problem.PAD
That is one of the nicest things anyone has ever said to me. I will work hard to make you glad you said it. Thanks so much, after the day I'm having I needed that.
#3 could just about be #'s 1 through 10, so far as i'm concerned.Actually, as a denizen of Georgia, i think you're being a bit too quick to call "racism" in the Genarlow Wilson case. I think one should call "idiocy" on the part of rhe Georgia Legislature, who basically wrote a law with no thought to potential results of its draconian provisions.A *lot* of people worked to get that kid out of prison – and i'm fairly sure that not all of them were black…
Point taken Mike. Your statement makes me think of the Civil Rights movement where there was also a multitude of white, asian and latinos who worked together for a common goal.

As always your insight is right on my friend.
Sorry Michael but you can't hold #8 over Mike's head, I am the one who mislabeled the packages not him. But feel free to hold it over my head.
Nope-I have to blame Mike. It's a man thing.
Can I list your #2 as one of the reasons I'll be happy in 2008?

I have to agree! I can't wait to see what you have in store for 08. That will be a visual treat.

I want you to know that when this page came up with Sammy Davis Jr., I laughed in pleasure!
You do have good taste!
If anyone out there hasn't heard of Sammy Davis Jr., they don't need to go to Google, they need to go to I-Tunes or Amazon and start downloading NOW!
