Mark certainly has been influenced by Japan, having lived there for awhile and in fact married a Japanese woman (whose name is, perhaps not coincidentally, Miki). I don't think he wanted to make this manga-like any more than he wanted to make Akiko manga-like. It's just his storytelling style, which has always included textures and tones. Miki Falls is probably my favorite work of 2007, I can hardly wait until Volume 4 comes out next monthl (Full disclosure: I've stayed at Mark's place and interviewed him at length, even though that was about 10 years ago.)

I read the first volume of this book at a book store, since I had nothing better to do, and this was the only Manga like story that was, I really enjoyed looking through the pictures since I draw in a very similar manner, and the story is absolutely amazing, it pulls you in and gets you craving for more, I was in tears when I had to leave and not finish the second volume.
