Well done Michael. Not a day goes by when I don't read or hear some story that makes me say "where were the parents?" And you are so right that it cuts across all economic spectrums. I lived on the Lower East Side for 10 years when it was one of the toughest neighborhoods in NYC and I have lived for years in Fairfield County CT one of the wealthiest places in America and I have seen great kids and awful kids in both places. There are many things shape the child but none as much as the parenting recieved. I can't claim to have been the best parent ever and I know I have made many mistakes but I believe I left my daughter with a strong sense of what's right and wrong and how to treat other people if nothing else.

"why there is so much of an uproar about who raises a dog and virtually none about who raises kids?"Reports about people who kill children, parents who buy their kids the guns so that they may try and kill children, and children who are raised in animalistic condition by people who could NOT care less are called "news items".Stories about puppies taken away from little children (especially if they are the friends of celebrities) are called "human interest items".As in, they are the ones humans are interested about. Also, the rule is that it is very rarely the parents' fault. "Rule" and "fact" being two different words. In the words of Parker and Stone,"We must blame them and cause a fussBefore someone thinks of blaming us!"

Thanks for another great article, Michael.A sad note is, we've been hearing the same words from the very same mouths of the rappers and TV shows that are blamed for desensitizing our kids and making them more violent. I guess people are still too busy thinking of other people to blame to listen.
