As far as I'm concerned – THE SPIDER is the only pulp hero who lives up to all the hype about the pulps. Lurid, nasty, sexy, violent, over-the-top PULP. And where were all these wonderful reprints back when I was shelling out all that cash for the original pulps? And come to think of it – Tim Truman and I have both done comic book versions of THE SPIDER. Small world.

"The man who best typifies pulp virtues, where the extreme is commonplace and New York City is destroyed every month."Well, the Spider is the embodiment of one kind of pulp virtues, that's for sure. He's what I'm calling, in my pulp encyclopedia (due out 2009), a Killer Vigilante, and the author's approach to widescreen property destruction is certainly a lot of fun, and on part with the Operator #5 stories. But that's only a small section of the pulp virtues, I think.Am I quibbling? I suppose. But there was such a wide array of characters and stories in the pulps that I'd hate for the violence of the Spider to be described as the best expression of the virtues of the pulps. There was so much more to them than that.
