One last Harry Potter spoiler
You’d think, months after the last Harry Potter book had come out, that there wouldn’t be any more surprises.
You.
Were.
WRONG.
Spoilers ahead…
Albus Dumbledore is gay.
According to the AP and confirmed by attendees, J.K. Rowling outed the Hogwarts headmaster last night while appearing before a full house at Carnegie Hall. After a reading, she was asked by one young fan (although Bloomberg says the fan was 19 years old) whether Dumbledore finds "true love."
To gasps and applause, the author responded that she always thought of Dumbledore as gay. She explained that Dumbledore had a thing for Gellert Grindelwald, whom he defeated long ago in a battle between good and bad wizards. Rowling noted that "Falling in love can blind us to an extent," adding that Dumbledore was "horribly, terribly let down" and that this love was Dumbledore’s "great tragedy."
"Oh, my god," Rowling concluded with a laugh, "the fan fiction."
Oh my god, yes. Everybody, batten down the hatches. A flood of various liquids is about to come our way. (And for that matter, so are a bunch of moralists who now have another reason to want to ban these books, although on her reading tour Rowling also cited a heavy Christian influence in her writing.)
"Headmaster, indeed"
Oh, you guys are bad. I’m going to be chuckling about this all weekend long. So far as the moralists go, well a friend of mine and I are dealing with them for just as stupid a reason. We do mermaid, art and it would seem that mermaids are, “Offensive sex symbols known for being the demise of sailors” No kidding. Check it out… http://christophermoonlight.blogspot.com/search/label/Mer…
What I want to know is, what have they done in this world to make them know the mind of God? The way I see it is, you can go around telling people how to think and feel, or you can write a bunch of books that get millions of kids to start reading at an early age (or some other positive thing) where they might not have before. I ask you. Who’s the better person?
Oh, the fan fiction. How am I going to get that image from your post out of my head?
Hmm, for some reason the first past of my post didn’t show up. Maybe it had something to do with that link I put on it. Anyway, here it is. This is what the link had to do with.

No human alive on the face of the earth CAN know the mind of GOD. And scew if they say they do ’cause that’s a load of BS!
We just form our own ideas of what’s right or wrong or what we like or don’t and then say that’s the way God wants it.
I mean…look at the Chatholic Curch….No One Expects The Spanish Inquisition!
Seems like every body does it huh?
Only problem there is you get so many conflicting points of view all claimimg to come from on high and be the one true way and how can any of ’em be right?
Remember, religion was and is concieved, written, edited and drawn by…MAN!
And we ain’t puffict!
You are so right, yet so many people walk around like they do. It makes me feel ill.
Yeah Chris..me too bro!’
Gimmie an Ahmenstration!
So why wait so long? And why not drop hints in the books? Afraid of the backlash from conservative parents? Doesn’t she already have that in spades?
It just seems sort of… retconned, doesn’t it?
Like "By the way, I know it hasn’t been mentioned before now, and there’s really not much to support it or even allude to it in my books, but…"
Perhaps JK received a bit of backlash for outing Potter as a "Christian" work from the left, so to appease she decided to equally piss off the right?
Or maybe it’s all just a bit of fun on her part. Who knows?
To reference a line from HP5…
"You may not like him, Minister. But you cannot deny, Dumbledore’s got style!"
So she wrote a gay character but kept him closeted, then killed him off and outed him after his death. Where is GLAAD when you really need them?
If it's of any consequence, never within any of the seven books is Dumbledore's preferences actually mentioned or refered to. His sexuality is something she had always decided upon, but never wrote about. And in the full length version of the interview, Rowling's says he is the only one.Personally, I don't see where all this should actually matter if you take the context of the books as is, but then again there are "concerned citizens" out there still trying to get The Wizard Of Oz books banned, and that series has already achieved classic status.
{laugh} I thought I'd point out the excellent image selection by Glenn of Dumbledore cherishing a rather phallic looking sword. Whether it was intentional or not, bravo. {Yes, I have a dirty mind I know.} :-P
Much as I'd like to take credit for it, the image was found by Elayne Riggs, two-fisted news editor.
Thanks, Glenn; I also take the blame for stacking the deck with the "headmaster, indeed" subtitle snark.Joe, Rowling also said that if she'd known what a positive reception the revelation about Dumbledore would get, she'd have outed him much sooner.
