In your grandmother's Hansel and Gretel story, were they sent off by their mother or stepmother?

A smart question, there. Thanks. My grandmother's version has the brother and sister raising such a ruckus about WANTING to visit their forbidden grandmother (their defunct father's mother, and a known witch), that their widowed mother sends them off with all due blessings: "Don't blame me if she puts a witchment on you!" A fairly caustic variation, and one that I've found in several folkloric versions from the Ozarks into various parts of Texas.I've had a comics version of this one in the works for some time, now. Might have to polish it off one of these days.– MHP
