MARTHA THOMASES: We Shall Not Be Moved

Martha Thomases

Martha Thomases brought more comics to the attention of more people than anyone else in the industry. Her work promoting The Death of Superman made an entire nation share in the tragedy of one of our most iconic American heroes. As a freelance journalist, she has been published in the Village Voice, High Times, Spy, the National Lampoon, Metropolitan Home, and more. For Marvel comics she created the series Dakota North. Martha worked as a researcher and assistant for the author Norman Mailer on several of his books, including the Pulitzer-Prize-winning Executioner's Song, On Women and Their Elegance, Ancient Evenings, and Harlot's Ghost.

Great comparison Martha. I always enjoy the comparisons you make between current day things and silver age comics.

I don't read many comics so I don't know what Kandor City is or how it compares, but I like her writing and this is a great piece. I came here to support Andy, but I find I'm reading other articles, too.

I would imagine the window washers in Kaldor City have a very strong union. Great article!

    Oops – Kandor!

My city recently acquired a Wal-Mart, but like other big non-union stores, I don't go there. I knew Manassas was a small conservative city when I retired here 16 years ago, but they've become more and more conservative; now they're ready to do unpleasant things to immigrants. I raise my voice, but those of us who do are definitely in the minority. We primarily think of the folks who died and were injured at the Pentagon here, but most of the responders were indeed union. Others were military folk, but not so many passersby were allowed to help because of security. You know, it's said that people who were liberal in their youth (I led my high school's group in the march against the Pentagon in 1968) get conservative when they're older. I'm 52, but apparently I'm not older.

Hi Martha, I've just picked up copies of your Dakota North series on ebay. At 38 years of age, I'm obviously old enough to have been a teenager when it originally came out. I recall that this was the period of time within which I was becoming a fan of both comic books and detective fiction. I purchased the above mentioned series in a fit of nostalgia, I guess. The question I have for you is: With Ed Brubaker reviving Dakota North within the pages of Daredevil, do you have any interest in writing stories featuring the character you created? Maybe as a mini-series of some sort. Thanks for your time!! I wish you the best.Sincerely,Patrick

Maybe. They'd have to ask, first. And they'd have to make it financially worth my time. Also, I would miss Larry Hama as my editor. He was aces.
