This one's gonna be a minefield, I can tell… Where's my helmet and flakjacket?

Someone once explained the toilet seat hostilities as the result of lighting: women can pee in the dark, while men tend not to. Therefore, women might not notice the toilet seat is up, but men will be more likely to notice if it is not. Hence, it is more polite for everyone to leave it down, out of consideration for the next person.

Consideration is nice but hygiene, to me, is the better argument. I don't want "particulate" on my toothbrush which i then stick in my mouth. I don't think anyone outside of a John Waters' film would. That gets the toilet lid closed and the controversy ends — for me. Somebody's else's mileage might vary.Endf of toilet paper still sticks OUT, though. I'm only SO reasonable.

I always explain it this way: "The toilet bowl is a toxic waste receptacle. It must always be closed when not in direct use." Makes the decision easier.

Wonderful column this week, John. Vinnie, I'm not sure the minefield you expect will materialize, as anyone who takes issue with John's point (that we should try to understand and allow for other perspectives in our daily living) has more or less proven it.
