Most scientists agree that being gay is not a lifestyle choice but a biological variation from the norm, like being left-handed or blue-eyed.

  2. Michael Davis says:

Martha, I said he chose a Gay lifestyle. You can be Gay and NOT choose a Gay lifestyle. There is an entire sub culture that does so.

  3. Martha Thomases says:

In that case, what do you mean by a gay lifestyle? Do they like shopping and interior decorating? Dancing? Looking at lots of different cute men? Enjoying musical comedy? Worrying about getting older and/or getting fat? If that's the case, I've chosen a gay lifestyle.

    • Mike Gold says:

I think you've chosen a stereotypical gay man's lifestyle.Sexual orientation is in the genes, but Michael's right — you do choose your own lifestyle. For example, some heterosexuals (and homosexuals) chose a lifestyle that embraces celibacy. There are virgins who die due to natural causes.

  4. Vinnie Bartilucci says:

"You can't prove there isn't a God, you just have to take it on faith"–Marc Bilgrey, Inside Woody AllenMr. Teriffic (JSA) is an atheist as well. I've always thought atheist was a weird position to hold in the DCU, where physical manifestations of the supernatural, not to mention servants of God themselves make daily appearances. It's easy to maintain there is no supreme being when there is no evidence to support the case, but when a literal angel of the Lord is fighting alongside you against the Spectre, the physical manifestation of God's Wrath, that's just stubborn…–"You can be Gay and NOT choose a Gay lifestyle. There is an entire sub culture that does so."They are called Catho…oh I just can't DO it!!!BTW, Martha, I've always been leery of that "gay from the womb" argument for two reasons. One, it can too easily be used by either side of the case to make homosexuals sound like victims, as in "We can't help ourselves, we were born this way", and why would one willingly take that position about their life? Plus, if there's a genetic switch for homosexualism, it suggests there's a switch for many preferences or predilictions, sexual or not. I find it hard to believe there's a switch that says I prefer vanilla ice cream over strawberry, or that I like looking at women in silver spandex acting like robots. Hmmm…perhaps I've said too much…Two, once you accept that it is a genetic switch of some type, it's only a step away from someone dedicating research funds to "cure" it, like cancer or dwarfism. And if you think the people fighting to protect the right of unborn babies to be born deaf are unsettling, wait till we have two people arguing the ethics of turning that gay switch off…or on.

    • Adriane Nash says:

of course there's a genetic switch why else would you hold those predilictions and preferences? They're triggers that are programmed somewhere, like allergies. Choosing vanilla over strawberry off a menu is one thing, knowing you like it better is kind of inate not a concious thought. I'm saying this as one of those rare women who doesn't like choclate and is made to feel like I'm wired wrong for it all the time.

  5. Michael Davis says:

Before we open this up to a huge debate let me be clear, there are Gay people who choose NOT to live openly with their orientation. That's it. Nothing else implied or suggested. Heck there are black people who do not admit they are republicans. BTW If the things you mention above are your bench marks then I too have chosen a Gay lifestyle. Except for the 'looking at cute men' part. I much prefer they look at me.

    • Adriane Nash says:

So when you say 'gay lifestyle' do you mean 'not closeted' because I'm sure there's a way to be 'openly' gay without wearing it like a badge. Folks can be true to themselves without marshalling parades.

      • Mike Gold says:

        But they're boring.

        • Adriane Nash says:

har-dee-har. I was just curious how Michael was defining 'openly' not looking to argue the merits of anyone's lifestyles. Some peole might think not living as a hetero or opting for celibacy over a homosexual relationship (a 'confirmed bachelor' if you will) as "openly gay" I was looking for clarification not a fight :)I wholeheartedly argee with his sentiment of "What you do with your life is really nobody’s business but yours. How you live, what you think and why you think it is all you, my friend" as long as you aren't hurting anyone have at it!

    • Brian says:

I know who you are and you owe me money.$200, ten 20's.

  6. Michael Davis says:

Nothing else implied or suggested. Nothing else implied or suggested. Nothing else implied or suggested. Nothing else implied or suggested. Nothing else implied or suggested. Nothing else implied or suggested. Nothing else implied or suggested. Nothing else implied or suggested. Nothing else implied or suggested. Geeez

  7. Jackson says:

The article was about creators being true to their own story, Why are the comments hijacking the article and making it about Gay issues?

  8. Spotter says:

You said you "respect people’s beliefs," but you added, "As long as they do not harm other people."Islam directs its followers to HATE and glory in the KILLING of all Jews and Christians. My question: Do you respect Islam? (Don't bother trying to tell me it's peaceful, or I will quote chapter and verse from the Koran to prove it is most definately NOT.)

  9. Adriane Nash says:

    vague vague vague vague vague

  10. Michael Davis says:

    white people (sigh)

  11. Vinnie Bartilucci says:

If we could invent an engine that ran on offense, we could tell the middle east where to get off.

  12. John Tebbel says:

One good reason a gay person would choose "not to live openly" with their "orientation" is to avoid having themelves lumped in with every other gay person and every other gay practise in the minds of people who may not have a thorough grasp of the subject. Long live the closet. I was stopped from doing a scene from Boys in the Band in high school and a guy joked, at my defeat, "If you've got it, flaunt it."

    Would it matter?

  16. Michael Davis says:

Must be a girl. Guys are not that deep. Do I know you?

  17. Anonymous says:

    I'll never tell.

  18. Michael Davis says:

    CHICK!!!!!!

  19. John Tebbel says:

Interesting how this has gotten back to truth and belief, to me anyway.

  20. Tony N says:

Michael, it was good to see you again today in chicago at Wizard, and turning me on to your site. My purpose in posing the topic of black atheists is not that you necessarily write about the exploits of such people, but to include them in the mix of people who are represented in any universe. The Black panel was filled with people with creative influence across a myriad of platforms, and 99% of the time religion is mentioned, unbelief is not expressed. Ever. It would be like showing the world is only with black people who live the gangsta lifestyle, and what kind of skewed reality would that present? Not a valid representation of reality among the black community, certainly. As a creator, I would think that accurate and believable characters would occupy any universe, whether TV, film or literature. That is what separates a good creation from a Great one. As for your suggestion that I write a story about black atheism, It is an intriguing idea. Though I am a scientist and not a writer, I might plumb your knowledge in getting such an endeavor started, if you're willing to assist. BTW, what is your new Universe regarding Health Care?

    • Michael Davis says:

Thanks for your comment Tony-I will help you in any way I can if I can. I can't get into the new Universe regarding Health Care just yet. Look for an announcement early in the new year. It will be big!
