Harlan’s send up *was* a put on. And Dave, who read the piece after Harlan wrote it (three years ago) was tickled to death. As was Paty.

I think what Ken Gale said was, "Mercy and I were the only ones who visited Dave." Which, of course, is bullshit.

Well, maybe he meant they were the only ones to REGULARLY visit, but you well know that I went once as well, because you called me during the visit. :) Still, it was indicative of the strangeness of the event that a few folks used the occasion to air grievances probably best left unsaid. I saw that Jo Duffy was visibly upset at Ken’s "only ones" remark, as she had never been informed of the details of where Dave was, etc. By the way, CBR has now posted its report of the event, including photos of you (at the podium) and me and Robin (with your back to the camera).

Cliff is correct … while Ken and Mercy visited several times and kept me appraised of what was happening…I was down in SC buying a house, retrieving our household goods and setting up a home for Dave to come home to…they were not the only ones to vist. Cliff and Andy Yanchus visited as did my sis, Barbara and her daughter, Kim…there were a couple of others, too… but Ken’s main message was that if you have a friend who is in the hospital, go visit. You will brighten their very dreary day and you may never have that chance to talk to them again. So many at the memorial wished they had called Dave and spoke to him or kept in touch…and lamented that they had not and that now it was too late… and that, I think, is good advice for everyone.

I spoke to Dave every day. I visited the hospital often. My bowel movements should only be as regular as my visits to Dave were.

  5. Mike Gold says:

Jeez, guys, what are you fighting over? Ken Gale’s misunderstanding of Dave’s visitor’s schedule? Better to spend the energy celebrating his life and his work.

  6. Clifford Meth says:

We’re not fighting, we’re kvetching. And like any middle-age Jew, I took the opportunity to comment on my bowels.

  7. Clifford Meth says:

Besides, this might constitute 80% of your comments for the day.

  8. Mike Gold says:

Jews certainly do bitch about their bowels. Damn, the goyem don’t know what they’re missing!

Only if it helps clear things. Otherwise, we suffer in silence. It's a WASP thing, you wouldn't understand.
