When cartoonists gather
Two good reports on cartoonist meetings, complete with pictures:
Howard Cruse details a get-together in Massachusetts of some Pioneer Valley cartoonists, and Mikhaela Reid talks about the Women, Action and the Media (WAM) conference in Washington DC, where she and fellow cartoonists Stephanie McMillan (who also has a review) and Jen Sorensen presented a "Resistance through Ridicule" panel and slideshow.
Fun fact from Stephanie: "When cartoonists get together, it takes a maximum of about ten minutes for the conversation to turn to Photoshop and/or font programs."
Stephanie was watching slow cartoonists, then. It's usually less.

Being compared to both Archie Comics and the Marx Brothers is high praise. I'm a fan of both.And if you want to see Monica Moon, just keep bugging ComicMix's Mike Gold (I'm sure he'll appreciate my telling people to bug him). While ComicMix is, thankfully, keeping me busy with Simone & Ajax for a bit, it never hurts to let them know that you'd like to see Monica Moon, more Simone & Ajax, or more of any of your ComicMix favorites. If anyone will be out at Comic-Con in San Diego, stop by the ComicMix Table, set up with the Insight Studios booth, and let them know what you think, while checking out some nifty suprises they'll have. I'm, unfortunately, missing it for the first time in 13 years, but I'm sure they'll pass on any S&A comments to me.
The quote was me, which is why I left it unattributed. But I said that in the comments to Mike Gold's column, "Why Comic Book Sales Suck,"which is why I put it in quotations. I think it sums up Simone and Ajax pretty well. You can certainly see the Dan DeCarlo influence (which I read as "Archie") and the pacing is frenetic and zany, like the Marx Brothers. The whole thing has a nostalgic or timeless quality. Have you ever read Arn Saba's "Neil the Horse"? That comic was surreal nostalgia too. But it was sweeter, more "precious" and cutesy than Simone and Ajax. I hear that there is a complete, unpublished, 64 page "Neil the Horse" graphic novel. Arn Saba was notable for trying to merge comics with musical comedy. I think that kind of experimentation would be perfect for web comics! Comics with a musical soundtrack.
