My wife is overweight (and black, but that’s always been totally beside the point, except maybe I should have told my folks before the first time she came over for dinner… :) ). She is fully aware of the difference between a fat woman, and a fat bitch. (The latter would have been my first wife.)

Oh, and Martha, all due respect to the author of that article, but the reason my wife has large thighs (and other weight issues that worry her, but not me) has to do with the fact that her ancestors, dating as late as the 1600s, came from a part of the world where famine was not uncommon; they developed steatopygia as a way of dealing with lean times. It’s taken her a long time to accept that she just isn’t healthy when she tries to get her weight below about 200 or so…

Jonathan, I, too, come from a long line of large-thighed people. Most likely we developed them to flee from Cossacks, but it’s useful in New York, where we walk a lot and need the stamina.

MD: “racist decisions are being made by good people who have no fucking clue that their actions are racist

In my experience, rarely is that NOT the case.

  3. Tammy Brown says:

The whole ‘I’m colorblind” thing is a nice sentiment but doesn’t hold water over the long run. If you don’t see someone is Black or White, it’s denying a huge part of who they are, who their influences are. I’ve been down a similar road as you in terms of relationships…I even married a White man. In business, there is a big amount of racism. It doesn’t make success insurmountable. what it does is make it trickier for us more than for most anyone else.

    • Great point Tammy. To clarify- when I say I don’t see anyone as black or white I mean any decision I make regarding them in my life and how I deal with them has nothing to to with their color. When I got married half my groomsmen were white and my ex-wife was Cuban. Never once did I consider any one’s color when making that life changing decision.
