MoCCA Recap: Day One - Heat, Buzz, Star Wars and Dinosaur Comics

With one day down, I still feel pretty good about declaring MoCCA Arts Festival my favorite comics event thus far this season. Sure, it doesn't have the numbers or names of New York Comic Con or San Diego's Comic-Con International, but it also doesn't have 100,000 people vying for seats in 1,000-chair auditoriums and competing, mind-numbingly overpowered loudpseakers at every other booth. What it does have, however, is a great opportunity to… Read more ›

MoCCA Recap: Day Two - Fire! Smoke! Sellouts and Links!

Day Two at the MoCCA Art Festival was... an experience. Except for the few moments when the possibility of dying via fiery inferno was an issue, much of the day felt as if I was slogging through a sweaty, soupy mess thanks to the outdoor conditions and the exhaustion from the previous day (which I detailed in my MoCCA: Day One Recap). As ComicMix's Elayne Riggs pointed out earlier today, the forced evacuation of the Puck Building generated quite… Read more ›

Me, Come MoCCA - by Martha Thomases

I like New York in June. How about you? There’s all the hippie, flower-child kinds of reasons. The days are warm; the nights are cool. The leaves provide dense shade, like stained glass windows from a Tiffany dream. The humidity is low, so the garbage isn’t baking on the sidewalks. Nature is reborn. It feels good to have a body. There are also the 21st Century Geek Squad reasons. Free music in the parks. The summer movie season is at… Read more ›

Webcomic News Roundup: MoCCA, Silly Sketches and Somber Tales

I've spent most of the day looking over MoCCA Art Festival schedules and guest lists for this weekend, so it's been a light one here at ComicMix. Before I slide back into MoCCA madness, here are some short bursts of info and links from the webcomics scene that I've been meaning to share. Yesterday, Diesel Sweeties creator Rich Stevens ended "two years of procrastinating" by announcing the launch of online tee shirt store… Read more ›

Just another MoCCA Monday

Friends of Lulu has been a visible player in the comics world for about fifteen years now.  Like many organizations, it's had its share of controversy.  It's also helped give visibility and voice to a lot of talented writers and artists in an industry where, until very recently, one of the most frequently asked questions seemed to be "where are all the women comics creators?" In the interest of full disclosure, I was very… Read more ›

As mentioned previously on ComicMix, last night's "MoCCA Monday" panel was held in conjunction with Friends of Lulu and the Ormes Society, and featured three enterprising women of color working in the comics field.  Moderator (and Ormes Society founder) Cheryl Lynn Eaton interviewed Rashida Lewis, Jennifer Gonzalez and Alitha Martinez about their various projects, experiences in comics as both fans and creators, and hopes and… Read more ›

MoCCA Catches Fire!

Smoke in the sub-basement, fire in the sky...  As if this weekend's MoCCA Art Festival weren't already the hottest ticket in town during the hottest couple of days so far this year, there was a fire condition around 3 PM on Sunday that wound up causing an evacuation of the building. An earlier video of the event was taken down from YouTube for some reason, but Brian Heater of The Daily Cross Hatch posted one of his own. Have a look: … Read more ›
