    Mike,

Your 385 word intro/dissertation on funny books — really, really funny books — caught my eye and stimulated my dust-laden funny memories of the original Popeye cartoons. You know, the ones by Max and David Fleisher … way back when, when creators not only knew how to create funny comics but funny cartoons too. The old Popeye cells were not only black & white, but riddled with slapstick, imagination and wit. Oh … and a barrel of laughs! The lyrics to ‘Popeye the Sailor Man’ of these old toons actually changed from episode to episode (lots of people never noticed that subtlety) and sort of captured Popeye’s philosophy for the storyline. Two in particular stand out: in the cartoon where Popeye proposes to ageless Olive Oyl (who inevitably turns him down), the lyric goes … “it’s been known through history that women’s a mystery, says Popeye the Sailor Man;” and, in the episode where Popeye baby sits Sweet Pea by taking him to the zoo (a truly funny, ha-ha piece) he sings “… no ifs, and or maybe’s, I’ll never have babies, says Popeye the Sailor Man!” Smart and funny stuff. Thanks for the memories. And women will always remain a mystery … says Popeye the Philosophical Man.

Rick, you and I were blessed to have grown up in time when local teevee stations were desperate for programming and cut deals for ancient, cheap cartoons — as well as public domain cartoons. We got all kinds of great stuff — the Fleishers’ Betty Boop and Superman, the great early Warner Bros. stuff, tons of Tex Avery and Bob Clampett… it was great stuff and helped make some of our generation truly… weird.

If there’s a good pizza place nearby, maybe you can get the comics shop to take the book over and send it to your place along with dinner.
