Must be something wrong with me – the only Miyazaki film that i really like is Kiki’s Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke i found mildly interesting, and Howl’s Moving Castle, to a lot of people who read the book by Diana Wynne Jones many years before the film, is actively repugnant.

I’m actually afraid to view Arietty, since i loved the “Borrowers” books as a child and fear what he may have done to it.

So are you saying that I should definitely read the book HOWL’S MOVING Castle? Because I have only seen the movie and thought it was wonderful! But if you say that the book is better then I definitely need to check that out!

There is something wrong with you to not adore all Miyazaki films.

I can intellectually admire them. I can enjoy them (when he’s not screwing up one of my treasured experiences.

But i don’t see any need to uncritically adore and revere them. Or reason.

I had to pause and go so something else in the middle of Spirited Away and i don’t think i ever felt the need to come back to it.

I can’t imagine myself doing that with, say Cocteau’s Beauty and the Beast.

That depends, i guess, on how you feel about British children’s/Young Adult fantasy (and i do not mean Harry Potter, which i consider an overly-cutesy half-hearted imitation of Diana Wynne Jones).

Among the differences between the book and the film:

The Witch of the Waste is a beautiful woman

Sophy’s sisters are a LOT more important.

The castle is just a stone castle — that slides along the ground.

Howl’s apprentice is a lot more important.

Calcifer is a lot more important.

There’s a whole lot of backstory scattered here and there.

Sophy is a lot more acerb and less tolerant of Howl’s drama.

Other witches and wizards are a lot more important in the story.

    And so on.
