The Simpsons is the longest running series in television history? Sorry, no. Apparently the people behind "The Point" don't realize that The Simpsons at 20 years, is dwarfed by Doctor Who, which ran for 26 years from 1963-1989, before going on hiatus, to return for the Paul McGann TV movie in 1996 and as a regular series as of 2005. Then there's various daytime soap operas, some of which started out on radio. Like Guiding Light, recently in the news because it came to and end after a combined 72 years on radio and T.V.
.
Maybe The Simpsons is the longest running animated series, but that's not what the host said. In fact, he compared it with the live-action western Gunsmoke (which, for the record, also began on radio).
