God, I never understood the Ianto fanbase. Yes, he was a good character but he had such a small role compared to the others that he just never seemed to matter to me. Heck, Jack and Gwen seem to have more chemistry. I am more upset over the death of Owen and Toshiko.Guys, before you decide to chop off my head, let me just say, I love Ianto. I really, really do, just not as much as the other characters and only because he never seems to have enough screen time.
I never understood the Gwen fanbase. Just because he was a 'minor character' doesn't mean that he doesn't matter. And if you love him, why would he NOT matter to you? As for chemistry– Owen and Tosh had SO much more than Cooper and Jack. Personally, I find Cooper to be 1 dimensional and rather drearily acted. Nothing Gwen Cooper did has ever moved me to tears. To be honest, if she were to die or lose HER loved ones, I seriously doubt her performance would move me at all.
Oh, he did matter. I was upset over his death, but he didn't leave such an impression on me that when he died, I refused to watch Torchwood ever again. Heck, no character has ever had that much affect on me, and that's why I can't seem to understand some of the Ianto fanbase.Yes, I do agree that Owen and Tosh have great chemistry. Pity, their relationship couldn't have gone further.
maybe Dr. Who will come sweeping in and find a way to bring Ianto back or maybe jack will on one of those distant planets he's run off to
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE TORCHWOOD.I don't want it to ever end. Series 4, bring it on, series 5, can't wait, series 6 I'll watch that tooWas sad Ianto Jones died but hay we don't want the series to end up like American TV, always a predictable happy ending now do we! You just keep em coming PLEASE!!!
What makes me angry is that some of you (you know who you are) feel that because RTD and you loved series 3 and found no fault with it are angry that not everyone agrees. SO WHAT?Get over it! Sure, it was a fun show but even I, who loved it, can list at least a dozen things WRONG with it. RTD and teh writers are far from perfect. It's called MONEY and INFLUENCE. RTD has enough of both he could write utter crap and still get another series. Besides, even though I loved the show it has become more like EVERY OTHER SCI FI SHOW OUT THERE! In series 4, keep the politics to a mimimum and let the OTHER characters shine some.
I decided to throw my 2 cents in because I can. I watch little TV during the week and none on the weekend. Other than the local news, classic Law and Order and reruns of Star Trek, I only watch 1 or 2 programs. I only own maybe a dozen or so DVDs and I don't record anything (no DVR, TiVo, DVD recorder, vcr) because I prefer books to TV and hanging with my family/friends over books. I rarely get hooked onto TV shows. My friends loan me stuff and I have Netflix so I watch 1-3 DVDs a week at best. I watched TORCHWOOD 1 and 2 because a friend loaned me the sets and it took me nearly a month to watch it all. I only watched CHILDREN OF EARTH because it was a 90 minutes for 5 straight days committment. It was a decent show that lacked the charm and uniqueness of the first 2 series. It reminded me of a graphic novel with how fast it moved. It was okay enough for me to borrow my friend's DVD of it later but not enough for me to buy it or Netflix it. I find Jack to be a rather infantile man and Gwen and Ianto were there just to look pretty (through the entire 3 series). Owen was much more interesting while Tosh needed more screentime. The only ones form series 3 I liked were Alice, Frobisher and Rhys. No one in TORCHWOOD ever really evolves as a character. They tried to make us think Gwen did by changing her clothes but she was still an unsure little lost girl who didn't know what's out there, like in series 1. Ianto never truly got over Lisa; I believe that he told Jack he loved him because he felt that Jack wanted him to but that he knew as the episodes moved on that Jack was NOT Lisa and that he had moved far too fast after her death. Jack was his comfort, his rebound and the boy was in over his head. Jack was too cartoonish to be a hero. Look at the scene in the Thames House… He's jumping around, pouting when Ianto interrupts his speech and freaking out. He got too moody and PMS-ish whenever Ianto tried to talk to him about their relationship or Jack's family. Gwen was too busy bemoaning that Jack was not the dashing hero she wants him to be and Ianto was too busy trying to find out what he needed form Jack. None of them have really evolved. I'm not saying that I won't want to watch the new series, but if it continues like this, I'll only be borrowing it from a friend, not wasting money on it through Netflix. And I won't be watching it on TV because seriously, there are WAY better programs to watch that a show that's supposed to be about a group of alien fighters but is really about one dimensional people and their tawdry little problems. Plus, I will not change the channel when Law and Order is on. What are the chances that the new TORCHWOOD will be showing during the week when I'm not watching something? If it were still the 5 episode format, then maybe, but 13 weeks is too much committment for a so-so TV series. Also, just have to ask, have any of you heard about Davies and Fox collaborating to make a TORCHWOOD in America series? YIKES!!!
Gwen is a Mary Sue, plain and simple. They want us to ID with her but by cramming her down our throats…. a lot of people don't like her, a lot do. Just because some people don't like the characters that others feel they should is not a reason to belittle them. I never liked Gwen EXCEPT when she's with Rhys. They're good together. Jack is immature and tries too damn hard to be a hero; he never did deserve Ianto as Ianto needed someone who could love him whole heartedly. Series 3 was not Torchwood. It was a political drama that focus too much on minor characters and not enough on aliens. And the Rift? Not used at all. Alice was dumped on us (don't tell me that the novels, audio books, radio dramas couldn't have dropped subtle hints to make us go "OH MY GOODNESS" when we meet her) and Lois is Ianto in a short skirt. Gwen ran around in high heel boots and sprayed on pants… Could Ianto only find clothes for them and clothes and shoes for Jack? He could have gotten her some better shoes. Not that someone who chases aliens for a living would be wearing HEELS to work. At teh least she should have stumbled and twisted her ankle. And having Jack wander the Erth before running off? BORING!And if you haven't listened to Into the Shadows, Jack DID love Ianto.
You are obviously unaware of the meaning of "Mary Sue" – you have it just about backward.SO why should i accept anything else you say?
Actually, that poster didn't define a Mary Sue, just stated that he/she/it thought that Gwen is one. Then followed that by stating his/her/its opinion of the 5 part series. Not that i agree or disagree with the previosu post, but maybe you should read the whole comment before getting snippy about it.It's not as if everyone accepts what YOU have to say anyway, bub.
I read every word of it; and it didn't make much sense, anyway.Given that Gwen was created by a man, she's very likely *not* a Mary Sue.
Mary Sues don't have to be the gender of the one who created them. And as for the poster listing what they didn't like about the show– it's their opinion and some of it (like the impracticality of Gwen's wardrobe and her coming out with not even a scratch or a twisted ankle) I agree with.Just because you couldn't make sense of it, doesn't mean others couldn't.And who really cares if YOU accept what ANY OF US have to say? You're nothing in the grand scheme of things, Torchwood or not.
For me the temporary downfall of the show was owens final death that was quite upsetting as i looked upon him as one of the main actors and as a result the 'team' feeling was lost after all the deaths i will still keep watching but it does give me the shits
I'll be intrested to see if jack is in it but I Probbly won't watch this new season and no jack=no torchwood though it WOULD be intresting to see what happend to torchwood..2? or was it 4? I can't remeber but one of the sectors dissaperd it would be nice if jack found them But all in all after the horror of COE I don't think I'll see jack the same way again and how they have ANYTHING to go off of for a 4the season is insane
People: It's nine months since this little post went up.Nobody is saying anything new; everyone is just chewing old soup.Time to walk away from the vaguely-equine-shape damp spot in the mud and find something *new* to obsess over.
So people are interested, big deal. Obviously you still want to talk or read about it because you've posted. Let people say what they want.
has anyone remembered the beginning of series 2? the entire team were replicated because of a time slip was it? even capt jack said 'we will have to avoid ourselves, so unless they were killed off as well, the entire team can come back. its likely that they were put into suspended animation by capt jack, so they are there lol.but since nothing new has been said by anyone involved its possible there will be no new series 'sniff sniff'
When captain jack killed his grandson that was the end of torchwood. The killing off of the other adult characters (yanto etc ) is all in the series evolution. To turn the main character from good to plain evil that is bad scriptwriting . Anybody with any morals would looks at capt jacks character and think child murderer. How can they hope to bring him back as some sort of hero, when he has commited one of humanities most vile acts.
he may of killed his grandson but he saved millions of lives so i believe if this was real life he would be classed as a hero, they could bring it back ( after all other progs are/have coming/come back for example prime evil/ doctor who) and there are even ways to bring back the torchwood base its very simple really and it can still follow on from season 3
But "dead is dead" and if Ianto is going to remain dead, then so should Steven. As for the base, RTD and Co. wanted it gone and the set has been replaced (New Doctor Who, I think). None of the other TW bases have ever been rebuilt so why start now?Not that I care. Between the dismal/no hope left ending, Ianto and Steven's death (one pointless, one a terrible sacrifice), Jack running way yet again and the way that RTD had the 10th Doctor playing pimp (aka, matchmaker) at the end of "End of Time", not to mention it's been nearly ONE ENTIRE YEAR since series 3… I could care less if they make any more TW. We waited how long for series 3 and many (for various, not just Ianto, reasons) were extremely disappointed (yes, I know many weren't, that's not the point) and all we got were 5 little episodes and now having to wait for 12 months or more just to see Gwen strutting about the place taking charge in Jack's absence/Jack's overbrooding or far too happy and healed after it all is not something that interests me. I'll stick to Doctor Who ans MI-5 (at least they develop main characters before offing them and have proven that you can get rid of without killing, ie, Tom Quinn was decommissioned not killed). As for Gwen, as I know she is a sore point for so many, I've never cared much for her. The acting is superb but I have been in Rhys' shoes and cannot feel sympathy for him because I think he knows that Gwen has betrayed him before and would again (either for Jack or someone new who's dashing). Having a baby with him does not mean she will settled into life with him. She flirted shamelessly with Jack while dating Rhys and sleeping with Owen. She has very little shame and feels she must be seen as right. That's not being the Heart of Torchwood. That's being selfish and immature. She was played as the main character, next to Jack, all 3 series and now I think she needs to focus on her family and work parttime for TW. This would enable her to still be in several episodes but also allow the REST OF THE CAST time to shine. Torchwood is not supposed to be about one single woman fighting aliens, it's supposed to be about the TEAM. I've seen others on this site and more say this and I will say it too:NO GWENWOOD.
I want/need Ianto Jones back on Torchwood. For me, losing him was the last straw. Owen, Tosh and Ianto were the things that got me interested in the quirky, unique show. Losing Tosh and Owen hurt but at least they came to a conclusion of sorts. They never quite got together but they had evolved as characters to the point where their untimely deaths, while sad and full of tears, was okay. It was acceptable because we could see how much they cared about each other.Ianto did not get that far. He died not certain hos his lover, Jack, felt about him. That one word, "Don't", made so many of us question whether or not Ianto meant anything to him beyond a 'part time shag.' Yes, John Barrowman has stated in various interviews that Jack DID love Ianto and many of the last audios support this claim. But the portrayal of Jack in "Children of Earth" shows Jack as only caring about his own problems. He constantly brushes Ianto to the side and focuses on himself. Yes, his family was important but he completely disregarded his lover, his PARTNER until the very end, as Ianto lay dying and confessing his own feelings for his Captain.Recently, TW magazine held a fan fiction contest for UK fans. The rules stated it was to be set between series 2 and 3. Why not have everyone who can write a short (say no more than 10 pages) story where Ianto returns in a PLAUSIBLE fashion and send it in to the BBC, BBCAmerica and Starz? It would have to be something that could be formatted for TV, which means no graphic sex. Also, no killing off of major characters because that would only anger some, instead of pleasing them. This could be sent in addition to coffee, postcards and letters. Also, many of us US fans are unable to send mail to the UK BBC due to the cost. This would enable us to show our devotion to the show as well as to Ianto. Each story should be accompanied by a brief, polite letter stating that we want Ianto back as well as praise for the BBC (Doctor Who springs to mind).Yes, many of these letters and stories would be ignored, maybe tossed out. But maybe, just maybe, that one special, well-written letter/story will catch the eye of the RIGHT person and Ianto will be brought back to us.Any thoughts on this? Any at all, good or bad. Improvements on this idea? Any other guidelines to follow, such as getting a second opinion on a story before mailing it out?Share this with any and all Ianto/TW fans to get people writing!!!!
Yes, many of these letters and stories would be ignored, maybe tossed out.Every single one of them will go straight into a shredder. If it's not agented (or sent through an attorney, in some cases), professional film/TV companies don't even read over-the-transom/"slush pile" stuff, because too many people will immediately sue over any fancied resemblance to something they sent in written in crayon on a brown paper bag, even if the film/episode they're upset about was already finished when they sent it. "The Trouble With Tribbles" was a long time ago; things have changed.
Ianto, come back!!!
One year has passed and you know what, I'm still a 'hysterical woman' who will not watch Torchwood Series 4. It is not just because of the unnecessary death of Ianto. The miniseries itself was bad. It would have worked better as a standalone with no TW people in it, as they all took the back burner to Froibisher anyway. The only TW character who was spotlighted was Gwen and sorry, she was never a reason for me to watch TW. The only thing about he I liked was Rhys and he will not doubt be killed/retconned to make way for Gwen to yank Jack into bed with her. I don't want to watch Excalibur/Gwenwood. Not what I signed on for so it's so not happening at my place.
I've read the leaked synopsis and seen comments from others about TW:New World but sadly, I still only liked TW series 1 and 2. And no, not because of Ianto. I enjoyed the monster of the week format because they actually focused on the CHARACTERS as well as the aliens. This 10 episode with a single story arc and only two of the original TW people? Sorry, but I've never been much of a fan of RTD's works and what little faith I had has been lost due to recent interviews. I don't believe in him nor am I at all intrigued by the New TW.
I wont be watching season 4. First, they kill Owen, then bring him back (technically they killed Suzie first and the brought her back, but I don't count her ^^) and then they kill Owen again, and then they kill Tosh? That alone was bad enough, but I could cope, because I still had my favourite character, but then they go and kill him too?! Sorry folks, no Ianto, no me.Long live the coffee boy
Me too! Too much, too soon. Even though I never expected Ianto to live through to the end of the show, it was too soon.
Rhys may be a part of the team now, but they totally wrote off PC Andy in Season 2 and 3 into a bit part. Clearly there are other characters already within the show they can have "more fun" with!!!
I suspect it'll be Jack with an entirely new crew. I think that because, unless this article is wrong, Gwen's character won't be there: http://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a164356/torchwood-st… Maybe it'll be set far in the future so that John Barrowman doesn't have to pretend he hasn't aged in the last 5 years? If it's all new time and all new crew, I might give it a chance. I am wary, though. I'm with the folks that say why get invested in a new cast when they're just going to be killed off…
One at a time? They seem to die in droves.
That was filmed months ago. Eve talked about it in an interview for COE.
Captain Jack can't age anyway – I recall something to the effect that he is in a fixed point in space and time. So 5 years should make no more difference than the ~10,000 he has already spent buried under Cardiff. That aside, I'm really curious where they could go from here. It almost seems like it would have to be a fresh start.
Glad to see the Brits have some sense about 'em in that they picked up on how well liked Torchwood is. Too bad I can't say the same for our SciFi Channel going SyFy, but that's another rant (BAD NBC Universal, BAD).Anyway, I did read lots of negative comments about killing off some characters. Come on now, we don't know what all was involved in writing off a character. Could be contracts were up. Could be series television was not what the actors wanted. Could be that the writers wanted to go a different direction. Always keep in mind, this is not just fiction, but science fiction. As we know, Capt Jack shouldn't exist. The Tardis sure didn't like him because he was a fixed point in time. Who's to say something equally strange and unusual doesn't bring our beloved character(s) back?As an American forced to live with the drab SciFi, with the occasional glimmer from Fox's Fringe, I long for more Dr Who & Torchwood. I miss the great series we had in Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, Stargate (New show coming YEAH!!), Babylon 5. Life is kinda dull right now considering the only laughs I got outside of SciFi was Boston Legal, and that's taken away.Hopefully we'll start to see more, but until then, I'm holding out my hope for Dr Who and Torchwood to grace our screens in the States once again.
Gwen will be in season 4 and don't forget that Jack was stuck in the ground for almost 2000 years which could explain the aging
The interview is still on YouTube. BBC breakfast interview with her and GDL. So that's not really relevant.
Oh, thank you! I missed that interview. I'll find it and watch it. I thought that, since the article was published only a few weeks ago that the filming was still upcoming.
Yes he can, Jack is the Face of Boe, and he has pointed out a few times that he can age, he mentions gray hairs and the like.
its implied but not specifically stated that jack is in fact the face of boe.but yes, he does age, albeit at a MUCH slower rate than other people. after the events of "parting of ways", doctor who season 1 finale where jack comes back to life for the first time, in the DISTANT future on a space station, he has to randomly time jump using the vortex manipulator, ends up back in the 19th century and has to live out until the doctor comes back to cardiff… tho in that time he notices grey hairs, but in torchwood season 2 gray (his brother) buries him before the city of cardiff has even been founded and he comes back in looking identical. torchwood, like doctor who, takes liberties with its continuity… as the doctor would say, times not a line, its like a ball of wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff…
SyFy is Iffy.
some people care that their fav characters hav been killed off!!!!!
People are allowed to LIKE the characters so maybe you need to get a new attitude. The so-called true torchwood fans need to stop treating the others like shit because they don't agree with Davies or the rest. Davies isn't perfect you know. He's not God and anyone who believes that they can force people to like the show need to get over themselves. you're about as important as the nameless extras in series 3.
