I-Con 28: 'Under the Radar: Comics You're Missing'
Among the exciting adventures at I-Con was a panel titled "Under the Radar: Comics You're Missing." The panelists (Carl Fink, Bob Greenberger, Glenn Hauman, Andy Weir, Bernie Hou, and me) and attendees came up with the following list, which we promised we'd post for reference. You should check them out if you aren't reading them already:
Webcomics:
- Alien Loves Predator
- Casey & Andy
- Cheshire Crossing
- Alice! Comics
- Medium Large
- XKCD
- Order of the Stick
- Goats
- Gunnerkrigg Court
- Dealing With the Devil
- Lady in Shadow (we're looking for where it went)
- Minus
- Garfield Minus Garfield
Print Comics:
- DC's new ongoing version of The Spirit
- PS238 by Aaron Williams
- Tokyopop's DramaCon
- BOOM Studio's The Muppet Show
- BOOM Studio's The Incredibles
- BOOM Studio's Potter's Field
- First Comics's Warp

Of course, the real takeaway from the panel was that you should be getting your comics news and Reviews from ComicMix.com!

Garfied minus Garfield? Sounds like a great one to read. I'm surprised Marc Fishman didn't suggest it yet!

What was I supposed to do? It was a big topic of discussion. I couldn't leave it out just because your audience already knows it's awesome.
Also, I'm amused by my apparently exuberance to make sure everyone was reading XKCD. I've got it up there twice!

It's all good Chuck. I just like to be a nudge. :)
Glenn Hauman (12:05 PM on Wed Apr 8, 2009)
XKCD was a bad edit on my part. Fixed now. (Originally, it had shown up in the print section as well, so I moved it.)

"Garfield minus Garfield" isn't under the radar, it's ART!

XKCD is so far under the radar, it had to be mentioned twice. Maybe that's how nice the comic is, "So nice, they had to mention it twice!"
What is First Comics's Warp doing on this list? It's been under the radar for 25 years! Warp featured one of the greatest comic book creations of all time, the City of Cynosure, located at the nexus of all realities. Now that would make the perfect backdrop for a comic book! You could have action, adventure, magic, fantasy, science fiction, romance, even noir crime drama all rolled into one comic! A comic like that would be ultra-cool! Somebody like ComicMix or IDW ought to publish a comic like that. Something gritty, but maybe with a back-up feature set in the same city (maybe with some of the same characters even) that could be funny. The lighter side of Cynosure. I bet that might be hilarious. Think of the possibilities!

Alice! is a geat comic - but the last update was about three years ago. A new series was promised, but apparently never materialised.
Garfield Minus Garfield runs on goComics, as does Brooke McEldowney's Pibgorn (don't bother to click on that link if you're at work; at least one nannyware company has it listed under "sex"...) and Justin Thompson's Vaughn-Bode-influenced-but-generally-safe-for-work Mythtickle.
I might also plug Misfile! {"In one little corner of the universe, there's nothing more irritating than a misfile..."} and Menage a 3 (definitely NSFW most of the time, but often hilarious...)

Let's try that again:
Garfield Minus Garfield
Pibgorn
Mythtickle
Misfile!
Menage a 3
(Also i'd like to mention dead winter - sort of zombie-apocalypse-meets-"The Most Dangerous Game"...)

Ummm, i had links in that comment and they appear to have Gone Away...
Jen C (11:41 PM on Tue Apr 7, 2009)
The link for Lady in Shadow goes to XKCD...again.

Thank you very much for the "Medium Large" shout-out!
Carl Fink (12:02 AM on Thu Apr 9, 2009)
If you don't mind the general weirdness, I'll add my third choice from that panel, El Goonish Shive.
Glenn, Chuck and anyone else reading: thanks for being there. That was a really fun panel.

one comic I don't think they talked about but the writer was at the convention was No Parking @ www.bymagic.com. Its way under the radar because I never heard of it before and without icon I never would have.
Carl Fink (9:03 PM on Fri Apr 10, 2009)
No Parking Web Comic (the official name) is by long-time I-CON volunteer John Sheehan. I probably should have mentioned it, but John did about 20 panels at this convention and I figured anyone who cares about comics heard him talk about it.
