I don't know if it's still true but at least some Hollywood FX specialists - Doug Trumbull for one, i think - liked to shoot miniature effects in VistaVision because of the huge negative area and the fact that it covers that whole area with a wide-screen image without the need of anamorphic lenses.

(Leone used Techniscope on "Once Upon a Time in the West" for similar reasons - it allowed him to shoot extreme closeups (filling the screen with just Fonda or Bronson's eyes) without the distortions an anamorphic introduces in shots like that.)

Being a highly retentive Hitch fan, I would probably run right out and buy this edition of the movie just for the extras -- had I not seen it in high-def on Encore the other night. Wow! Hopefully, the 50th anniversary Blu-ray release of "North by Northwest" later this year will spur studios to start kicking out more of the Master's wares in that format (with tons of cool extras).

And I agree completely with your assessment, Bob: this movie holds up beautifully. (But then, Grant and Kelly transcend eras, so that's no surprise.)
