You are right, Alan Moore's Swamp Thing was the crack in the door for the British Invasion of comic book authors and artists that reinvigorated comics in the 80s! Without Alan Moore's groundbreaking turn on Swamp Thing, would we have seen Neil Gaiman's Sandman or Grant Morrison's Doom Patrol or Animalman? Moore spearheaded a renaissance of reinvisioned heroes at DC. John Ostrander took up shop with Firestorm (another character that evolved into some kind of Elemental Force in the DC Universe), the Specter and Suicide Squad. Suddenly books not only had continuing story lines, there were overarching literary themes to develop.

But I think to see where Swamp Thing came from you need to recognize the earlier work of Steven Gerber over on Marvel Comics own Shambling Mound title, Man-Thing. I have a Giant Sized Man-Thing. (Yeah, I'm bragging. But it makes me giggle every time I get a chance to say it.) It was Gerber who had shown that comics could explore intellectual topics with a blend of fantastic and truly banal characters. Man-Thing bacame this bizarre blend of horror, hero and existential philosophy. And Gerber's Man-Thing characters were strange and varied. But they didn't achieve the subtlety, depth, richness, and natural growth that Alan Moore was able to create on Swamp Thing.

Without Alan Moore's Swamp Thing, we get no Neil Gaiman's Sandman. Without the combination of sales and critical acclaim that DC got from Swamp Thing and Sandman, there would have been no Vertigo Comics. And Vertigo continues to be a lighthouse of intelligent, inventive and cutting edge comics.
