They played it safe. Oh, to be a BBC showrunner... I'd have cast somebody completely weird. Like Sam Troughton, or Noel Clarke. Let the Doctor wake up looking like Mickey the Idiot... or turn him into a woman. A really, really hot woman... but keep the female companion. Get a buncha lesbian subtext in there... or drive away my entire audience and cast a rotund, fiftyish American porno actor in the role... Ron Jeremy as the Doctor! (hee!)
