Frank Spotnitz Optimistic About 'X-FIles 3'
Key Date in Mythology Approaching
Frank Spotnitz spoke with Movieweb about the current state of The X-Files franchise in the weeks prior to X-Files: I Want to Believe coming out on DVD on December 2.
“The studio has not said yes or no,” the producer said of a third feature. “I think the box office; unfortunately, we got creamed in the theaters by The Dark Knight. I don't think anybody could've anticipated that was going to be such a huge, historic phenomenon. To be a dark scary movie coming out the week after The Dark Knight was not the best timing. I think there's life in the franchise still. I think these are great characters. There's a date that looms very important in X-Files mythology, which is December 2012. I think after the DVD comes out, the studio will decide whether they want to roll the dice on another X-Files feature.”
On the subject of that date, he admitted, “I think we would definitely have to deal with alien colonization. I honestly think that's the movie that most non-hardcore X-Files fans, as well as a lot of hardcore X-Files fans are dying to see. Obviously, I think Chris has had ideas about that from the very beginning when he dreamt up this show, 16 years ago.”

you have a better chance of seeing the squid in "watchmen" than of seeing a third film in this series

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person who liked "I Want to Believe," but I really enjoyed it a lot and I'd welcome a third film. I do think it was just the timing that killed it, plus maybe that people were upset there were no aliens in it, but they always said it wouldn't. I think it'll end up doing well on DVD.

With all due respect, Frank Spotnitz is huffing glue. I'm a huge fan, but c'mon, everyone who saw the movie in the theaters would have to buy like four copies of the DVD to make this look attractive.

It's his own damn fault. For years, he's been jerking fans around, never telling the stories we've asked for -- or the stories that made the X-Files the X-Files. Seriously. the last movie, a run of the mill serial killer was the last straw. The Fringe does X-Files so much better than the X-Files, other than our affection for Mulder and Scully, why would you even bother? Note to Spotnitz, write the script as if it's the finale, let some of it "accidentally" leak to drum up hard core fan support, then how about doing something X-Files hasn't done in a decade, including the first movie and the last few seasons -- DELIVER!

Honestly, though I haven't seen I want to Believe, I do plan on seeing it, and much prefer X-Files over shows like Fringe, but I would be seriously amazed if they made another movie. It just didn't remotely do the kind of box office needed to warrant another movie. That may have been partially to do with the juggernaut Dark Knight, and who knows, maybe shows like Fringe will create a renewed interest in X-Files, but I doubt it would be enough.

I absolutely loved "The X Files: I Want to Believe." I thought it was nightmarish, intelligent, multi-layered and horrific! I think that given that the film has made back twice its budget at the cinema (international box office included), and should do well on DVD, not to mention fans all over the World clamouring for another film, we'll get a third feature film!

I abolutely love the X files. Loved the first movie and i thought the second one was fantastic. It ended up being exactly what Frank and Chris said it would be. It focused on the characters and delt with heavy themes that have always been at the core of the x files. There's a lot more to the show than alien conspiracies. I'm confident that there will be an x files 3 because eventhough it wasn't a blockbuster it didn't lose money. Fox will jump on the bandwagon as all the sudios do. Remember back when Independence Day was a box office smash, think of all the end of the world, alien, hero type movies that came out after it. I guarantee if this 2012 movie does well this year it won't be long before we see x files 3 on the big screen.
