People reading that Rock of Ages plotline may well draw more than a few parallels to the current plot of Final Crisis, not mention how many expect the story to end, with a massive time-reboot a la the third season finale of Doctor Who.

The Great Darkness Saga was easily the best Darkseid story to come along in years, and not only cemented the popularity of Levitz' and Giffen's legion, it also returned Darkseid to the "A" list of villains. And the theft of Validus was a revenge of Shakesperean proportions, befitting such an epic character. The fact that they only found out the truth a great time later only heightened the tragedy. It's a classic example of a retcon that completely changes the meaning of all previous stories with a character, but in this case it worked.

It always was the source of a massive Jellybean Moment (My personal term for the TVTrope "Fridge Logic" for me when I wondered how they would never notice the sudden disappearance of a fetus from Imra's womb. Considering all the ways they can track gestation now, I can only imagine how carefully they watch the kids in the 20th century. But as with all great such moments, the quality of the stories tramples the desire to explain such things.

Ah, no love for disintergrating Dan Turpin? Sure it was in the cartoon, but it was still damn shocking.
