There's rich and there's rich. In New York, I'm middle-middle class. If I lived in Youngstown, I'd be well-off. I think the split in people's attitudes comes from what they perceive to be the purpose of wealth. Some think it's a tool to make the world a better place, and some think it's a tool for getting more stuff.

Advertising has led me to believe that getting more stuff makes the world a better place... at least for me! If I BUY (RED) or SHOP PINK or even buy Girl Scout Cookies or over-priced wrapping paper through my daughter's school, I am told that my getting stuff directly makes the world a better place in general.

After 9/11, I wanted to know what I could do, how I could make a difference and stand up for Our Country. You see, I happen to live in one of the Pro-America parts of America, Minnesota's 6th District! President Bush gave us the answer. Like a true leader with a strong moral compass, he showed us the way. He said we need to be brave and go shopping. I've done that. I've shopped myself into a huge hole of patriotism. That's what the National Debt is, our collective Huge Hole of Patriotism. The more we buy, the more love we have for the USA! It's called fiscal responsibility.

I don't think that Colbert hangs with the President on a regular basis after the Correspondents dinner. He showed up, delivered a hilarious bodyslam of a speech and walked away with a check in his pocket for doing so.

Is that hypocritical? I dunno. To me it sounds heroic.

Here's a very relevant link where Alec Baldwin discusses Sarah Palin's recent appearance on SNL where he appeared briefly in an opening sketch (which I haven't seen myself yet) with Palin where he refers to her as "Tina" and then proceeds to trash Palin.

Absolutely nobody thought Bush and Colbert have ever hung out.

One of the points here is about the relationships between millionaire commentators and millionaire politicians. Some of the commentators you see on television have multi-million-dollar salaries. Those commentators frequently are close personal friends to the politicians they support, so they are permanently biased against the opposition. There should be a separation between commentators and the politicians they cover. It used to be thought that of reporters, but in today's television, commentators are the real power.

Want to hazard a guess as to “Joe Sixpack”-citing Sarah Palin’s net worth?

Not to mention the $150K the party has spent on wardrobe and grooming for her since the convention, nor the many thousand dollars the state of Alaska spent on travel and accomodations for her children - like the 5-hour conference in NYC that cost the state for round-trip commercial air and four nights in an $800-plus-a-day hotel, much of which should probably be reported as income.
