If you missed Ted Naifeh's "Polly and Pirates", you missed something utterly charming that I can't understand how it's not already in pre-production somewhere. Seek it out.

Scholastic is also the publishing home of Tamora Pierce, who writes good fantasy novels with female main characters that actually read as if she thinks that grrls can be just as brave and smart and strong as boys. (And who did a limited-series "White Tifer" for Marvel, which i haven't read.)
