Rogue Pictures’ Death Race may have been lapped by most summer films but will easily outperform the summer’s first bomb, Speed Racer. With a total of $29,793,000, it might actually earn the equivalent of its production budget, $45 million and make a profit once worldwide and ancillary income is factored in.

The Hollywood rule of thumb was that a picture had to gross at least two to two-and-a-half times its budget to break even.

These days, with merchandising, DVD and foreign receipts factored in, that rule is pretty much no longer valid - look at Ghost Rider which tanked at the US box office, but made enough on the ancillaries that there's apprently fairly serious talk of a sequel.
