I first encountered both Madame Xanadu and the Phantom Stranger in the BLUE DEVIL ANNUAL back in the '80s. From the brief exchange they had in that story, I figured those to had to have some kind of history together.

Come to think of it, that was my first introduction to Etrigan too.

Note that they did attend a Christmas party together before that. (Super Star Holiday Special--
1981 I think.)
