William Hartnell's Doctor was such a complete bastard that he was a joy to behold -- a hero who was an asshole to his enemies, to his friends, to the children, and even to his future selves.

That might not be a big deal today, but in 1963 that was a real shock to the system. Kids used to hide behind the couch when the Daleks vacuumed into the room? Hell, they should have hidden from Hartnell.

But Hartnell's Doctor was also vulnerable in the way our ancient grandfather types are vulnerable. He would frequently collapse in despair before figuring out how to save the day. Both those characteristics have remained, in varying degrees, in the future Doctors' catalogs.

Yes, despite the limited length of time I had available to speak with Warren, I couldn't resist asking him a bit about Doctor Who when the opportunity presented itself.
