The magic of the crossover. I have a theory that the crossover is a fabulous dramatic invention. It sparks the readers imagination. It's not just the questions like, "Who would win in a fight, The Thing or The Hulk?" But because crossovers can carry characters from different creators into the same universe, like GrimJack and Juddah the Hammer, that OPENS up the universe to a new level of imagination. The readers are are encouraged to imagine ANYONE crossing over and becoming part of the story, even ourselves.

"Wow, Tony Stark meets Nick Fury! Cool! What if Nick Fury met the Hulk! "

"Tony Stark is in the new Hulk Movie! Cool! I bet Tony Stark could design some cool Hulk Buster armor! Maybe that will be in the NEXT movie!"

"What if I met the Hulk! Scary ... Cool!"

Who is allowed to write a James Bond novel? Who is even allowed to IMAGINE a new James Bond novel? Well, it's Ian Flemming (deceased) or now, whoever is controlling the Ian Flemming estate.

Alan Moore has explored the crossover of classic characters. What if Dr. Jeckle and Mr. Hyde met The Invisible Man! What if Dorothy Gale from OZ met Alice Liddel and Wendy from Peter Pan! What if they all got busy! And no, Moore isn't the first to do this. What if Dracula met Jack the Ripper? That's a cool one!

The crossover democratizes the universe, in a way. It implies that ANYBODY can imagine themselves or their characters involved in this universe. The crossover opens up new universes of possibilities in storytelling. The crossover not only unifies a brand, it brings a new level of participation to every reader.

I am THRILLED to be mentioned in a Denny O'Neil column! Does this count as a cross-over...?
