Excellent list. I need to do some shopping this week.

Oh, this is great! I am a semi-newbie comic reader and I feel that this list will be a great way to give some background before going to see the new film. And, as it has been with the other lists on this site, they seem to spur on much additional reading and leads to the discovery of new stories. Thanks for this!

Good list. I can say with no hesitation that Planet Hulk is easily the greatest Hulk story ever told, and one of the best trades out there. Sure, its a blatant rip-off from Gladiator – which is a blatant rip-off from Spartacus, but Planet Hulk is the premiere Hulk saga. Its a shame WWH didn't live up to PH, but thats still a good read with some fantastic Marvel world references. In closing, I don't believe its essential to read PH before seeing The Incredible Hulk in theaters. However, it will only spike your passion for the big green machine and beg Marvel to make put it on the big screen.Good things and happy heroing. Dice

Oh, by no means are several of these stories essential reading BEFORE seeing the film. They're just great reads. :-)

Actually, I skipped PLANET HULK and read WORLD WAR HULK. WWH did an entirely acceptable job of establishing what happened to the character, and his current motivations, I thought.

True, but I still think it's good for emotional impact to actually read/experience the previous series of events. Being told "this person died" gives you the essential info but does not carry as great an impact as when you read it for yourself, form an opinion and/or attachment to the character, see the actual death occur and then see the immediate fall-out.

Good call Alan. And the film does a GREAT job catching the audience up to speed and relating the character to non-fans. After seeing the midnight show, there's only one thing left to say: HULK SMASH!! I mean, there's only one more thing left to say: GO SEE THIS MOVIE!!

That's a good observation RD Francis – admittedly, WWH did good job setting the scene for those who didn't read PH. WWH did a good job establishing Hulk's motivation, IMHO I was spoiled by the in-depth and simply much longer PH. Either way, I should hope we can agree that PH+WWH = a truly incredible Skaar: Son of Hulk. When alls said and done, I believe this Hulk trilogy will be a defining Marvel series…one I hope DC would take a cue from.

Great list Alan, I'm going to look for some of them on my trip to Midtown. Oh, this is Rob by the way. Rob who used to work at Midtown.

I realize that as an old, old timer my contribution may seem a little dated, but Fantastic Four #24, in which the Hulk just kicks the living crap out The Thing, is still my favorite. As they collide for the first time, Greenskin says: "You're just a muscular freak! I'm the Hulk!" So true, green dude, so true.
