A comment I saw on another site:

If someone says they didn't like this picture, they have just stabbed their inner child.

Matt, I suggest getting to the emergency room right away.

I'm more in the Dave White camp myself. http://movies.com/speed-racer/r895881/action

The movie could have used a better editor to pick up the pace of the scenes that don't involve a car, but I thought they did a good job being true to the show without camping it up. (For example, Pops grumbling and Speed "ooohohoooh"-ing his way through a couple spin outs were pretty low key.) I wasn't expecting Taxi Driver; I was expecting a live-action version of one of my favorite childhood shows. Mission accomplished.

Despite the fact that "Iron Man" is in its second week of release, it trounced the competition opening this week. Monetarily, "Speed racer" came in second -- barely. But considering that "Speed Racer" was showing in 400 more theaters than the third place finisher, "What Happens in Vegas," for all intents and purposes, "Speed Racer" came in a distant third.

The fact is, "Speed Racer" disappointed a lot more people than it satisfied, and the box office results are just a stark reflection of that. Even with the overseas box office take and eventual DVD sales, "Speed Racer" doesn't look like it is even going to break even.

"The fact is, "Speed Racer" disappointed a lot more people than it satisfied..."

Not quite right. Speed Racer is not disappointing a lot more people than it satisfied. Most people who have seen it enjoyed it very much. The truth is that most people just haven't seen it.

I don't know what reviewers were expecting to get out of Wachowski and Wachowski, but the negative reviews seemed to stress their names.

Word of mouth travels fast amongst moviegoers -- especially amongst the young people who are supposed to be one of the key demographics for "Speed Racer." If your assertion were correct, by Saturday or Sunday, people would have been flocking to see it. That didn't happen.

If, as you say, it's not a bad film, then the only other explanation for its poor showing is that it's an appealing film to a only a limited demographic. If that's the case, then the financers got screwed over, because it should have never been a big budget film in the first place.

Oh, the financiers got screwed all right.

In any case, this movie is a fun movie. It's not nearly as bad as the 35% rating at Rotten Tomatoes. A lot of people like it as much or almost as much as Iron Man.

As much as I wanted to believe that going in, Alan. I was a big fan of the series, and of the people I talk to, I was the only one who was actually looking forward to the film. That may be why I was so disappointed with it, but in any case, it had too many things working against it.
